Weigela Care

Weigela florida

An easy-care shrub known for its abundant pink, red or white trumpet-shaped flowers that open in late spring. It likes full sun or light shade and moist, well-drained soil. In hot climates like Izmir it performs better with regular summer watering.

Monthly care calendar

Timings are for a temperate Northern Hemisphere climate. In warmer areas tasks start earlier, in colder areas later; in the Southern Hemisphere shift them by six months.

January
  • Watering: Not required; the plant is dormant and winter rains are sufficient.
  • Pruning: To rejuvenate the plant, a few of the oldest and thickest branches can be cut at the base. Wait until late spring for the main pruning.
February
  • Fertilizing: At the end of the month, before new growth starts, some compost or a slow-release balanced fertilizer (e.g. NPK 10-10-10) can be applied to the soil. Do not overfeed.
  • Pruning: Remove branches damaged in winter. Wait for the main pruning.
  • General care: The plant is preparing to wake up.
March
  • Watering: As rainfall decreases, start keeping the soil moist; water once a week.
  • Fertilizing: Apply a balanced fertilizer or well-rotted organic fertilizer once when it wakes from dormancy.
  • Pruning: Not done; wait for it to flower.
  • Plant protection: Check the newly emerging fresh leaves for aphids.
  • General care: New shoots appear.
April
  • Watering: If there is no rainfall, water every 15 days.
  • Plant protection: The aphid population may increase. Control them if necessary.
  • General care: Flowering begins and this is the period when it is most showy.
May
  • Watering: If there is no rainfall, water once a week.
  • Pruning: Right after flowering ends is the best time to shape the plant and control its size. Late pruning destroys next year's flowers.
  • Plant protection: Generally hardy.
  • General care: Spread a 5-7 cm layer of mulch over the root zone; it retains soil moisture and suppresses weeds. Do not pile mulch against the trunk.
June
  • Watering: Water deeply twice a week; prefer infrequent and generous watering over small and frequent. Water around the roots to a depth of 15-20 cm.
  • Pruning: It is too late for pruning. Only a very light cleanup should be done, and only if it is necessary.
  • General care: The plant continues to grow vegetatively.
  • Pests & diseases: Water stress can weaken the plant and invite spider mites.
July
  • Watering: Water deeply twice a week; prefer infrequent and generous watering over small and frequent. Water around the roots to a depth of 15-20 cm.
  • Pruning: Prune as soon as flowering ends. Next year's flower buds form over the summer; late pruning reduces flowering.
  • General care: Growth may slow down in extreme temperatures.
August
  • Watering: Water deeply twice a week; prefer infrequent and generous watering over small and frequent. Water around the roots to a depth of 15-20 cm.
  • General care: The plant gradually prepares for winter.
  • Pests & diseases: Check the general health of the plant.
September
  • Watering: If there is no rainfall, water once a week.
  • Pruning: Not done. Pruning this month damages next year's flower buds.
  • General care: The plant is preparing for autumn colour. Occasionally, a sparse second flowering may appear this month. It is a good month to plant new young trees.
October
  • Watering: If there is no rainfall, water every 15 days.
  • General care: The leaves turn yellow and begin to fall. The suitable period for new plantings continues.
November
  • Pruning: After the leaves have completely fallen, pruning can be planned.
  • General care: Collect fallen leaves; many disease agents and pests overwinter under leaves.
December
  • Pruning: This is the most suitable period for pruning.
  • General care: The plant is fully dormant.
