Monthly care calendar

Timings are for a temperate Northern Hemisphere climate. In warmer areas tasks start earlier, in colder areas later; in the Southern Hemisphere shift them by six months.

January
  • Watering: Not required; the plant is dormant and winter rains are sufficient.
  • General care: The biggest risk in winter is excessively wet soil, so excellent drainage is vital.
  • Pests & diseases: Care must be taken against root rot.
February
  • Pruning: Light pruning can be done to remove branches damaged in winter. Wait for the main pruning/harvest.
  • General care: The plant is preparing to wake up.
March

  • General care: Flowering begins.
May
  • Pruning: After flowering ends, it can be pruned lightly to keep the plant more compact and prevent it from becoming woody.
  • General care: Drainage is vital for this plant. In heavy, water-retaining soil, plant on a mound or bed raised 20-30 cm, and keep the root collar above the surrounding soil level.
  • Pests & diseases: Avoid watering to prevent root rot.
June
  • Watering: In a long drought, water deeply once a month.
  • Pruning: If not yet pruned, light trimming can be done.
  • General care: It can be propagated by semi-hardwood cuttings in early summer.
July

  • General care: The plant may be semi-dormant during the hottest part of summer; this is normal.
