Monthly care calendar

Timings are for a temperate Northern Hemisphere climate. In warmer areas tasks start earlier, in colder areas later; in the Southern Hemisphere shift them by six months.

January
  • Watering: Not required; the plant is dormant. Only in very dry winters without prolonged frost may water be given once a month.
  • Pruning: Not done; it flowers on last year's shoots.
  • Plant protection: The trunk and branches can be sprayed with dormant oil (mineral oil) against scale insects and similar overwintering pests.
  • General care: Covering the root zone with dry leaves or mulch protects the soil.
  • Pests & diseases: Check the trunk for scale insects.
  • Frost risk: Fully frost-hardy; no special protection is needed.
February
  • Watering: Not needed; soil moisture is usually sufficient.
  • Fertilizing: At the end of the month, just before buds swell, a slow-release balanced fertilizer (NPK 15-15-15, 50-100 g per plant) can be applied to the soil. Do not overfeed.
  • Plant protection: Not done unless necessary. If disease carried over from last year is present, a Bordeaux mixture application can be made.
  • General care: Renew the mulch around the roots.
  • Pests & diseases: Observe the waking buds.
  • Frost risk: Young shoots may be affected by late frosts, but the risk is low for the plant as a whole.
March
  • Watering: If there is no rain and the soil is dry, give 10 L per plant per week during the budding period.
  • Fertilizing: If it was not done in February, fertilize at the start of the month. Do not overapply.
  • Plant protection: If aphids or other sap-sucking insects are seen on the newly emerging leaves, apply an insecticide (e.g. neem oil).
  • General care: Clear weeds.
  • Pests & diseases: Check the new shoots regularly for aphids.
  • Frost risk: There is still a low risk for young shoots.
April
  • Watering: If there is no rainfall, water every 15 days.
  • Pruning: Not done while flowering continues. When the flowers have completely faded at the end of the month, it is the right time for pruning.
  • Plant protection: Be watchful for aphids and powdery mildew. If white dusting (powdery mildew) begins on the leaves, apply a fungicide.
  • General care: Faded flowers can be removed if they bother you aesthetically, but wait for the main pruning.
  • Pests & diseases: It is prone to powdery mildew because of its dense foliage.
May
  • Watering: If there is no rainfall, water once a week.
  • Pruning: Pruning should be done right after flowering ends. One third of the spent flowering branches is cut, and the plant is rejuvenated by removing old, weak branches at the base.
  • Plant protection: Be careful about spider mites and powdery mildew. Spray during the cool hours.
  • General care: Spread a 5-7 cm layer of mulch over the root zone; it retains soil moisture and suppresses weeds. Do not pile mulch against the trunk.
  • Pests & diseases: After pruning, observe the plant and check for signs of stress.
June
  • Watering: Water deeply twice a week; prefer infrequent and generous watering over small and frequent. Water around the roots to a depth of 15-20 cm.
  • Pruning: Not necessary. Pruning during this period stresses the plant.
  • Plant protection: Check for spider mites and leaf-eating insects.
  • General care: Keep water loss and soil temperature under control by mulching the root zone.
  • Pests & diseases: Yellowing and dropping of the leaves can point to excessive heat and drought stress; increase watering.
July
  • Watering: Water deeply twice a week; prefer infrequent and generous watering over small and frequent. Water around the roots to a depth of 15-20 cm.
  • Pruning: Prune as soon as flowering ends. Next year's flower buds form over the summer; late pruning reduces flowering.
  • Plant protection: Continue pest control.
  • General care: Remove weeds around the plant.
  • Pests & diseases: Leaf spot diseases may be seen; collect and destroy the diseased leaves.
August
  • Watering: Water deeply twice a week; prefer infrequent and generous watering over small and frequent. Water around the roots to a depth of 15-20 cm.
  • General care: The plant begins to enter its rest period.
  • Pests & diseases: Collect fallen leaves to prevent possible fungal diseases from carrying over to the next year.
September
  • Watering: If there is no rainfall, water once a week.
  • General care: Continue clearing fallen leaves.
  • Pests & diseases: Pest activity generally stops in a plant that has gone into winter.
  • Frost risk: None; it is hardy.
October
  • Watering: If there is no rainfall, water every 15 days.
  • General care: You can add mulch to protect the root zone; it is especially beneficial for young plants.
  • Pests & diseases: The plant is fully dormant.
November
  • Plant protection: Check the bark and branches where pests overwinter. If necessary, plan a dormant oil application.
  • General care: Collect fallen leaves; many disease agents and pests overwinter under leaves.
  • Pests & diseases: No action is needed other than checking.
December
  • Watering: If rainfall is very insufficient, give a small amount when the soil dries out.
  • Pruning: Remove dead/damaged branches; do not prune heavily.
