Monthly care calendar

Timings are for a temperate Northern Hemisphere climate. In warmer areas tasks start earlier, in colder areas later; in the Southern Hemisphere shift them by six months.

January
  • Pruning: Not done; wait for spring for the main pruning.
  • Pests & diseases: Against the risk of root rot, make sure the soil is free-draining.
February
  • Pruning: Toward the end of the month, just before new growth starts, rejuvenate the plant by pruning one-third.
  • General care: For new plantings, improve drainage by adding sand or gravel to the soil.
  • Frost risk: Protect newly planted seedlings from severe frosts.
March
  • Watering: Only for newly planted seedlings, 5-10 L/week if it stays dry; reduce if there is rain.
  • Pruning: If not yet pruned, do it right away early in the month.
  • General care: After pruning, new shoots grow quickly.
April
  • General care: It grows fast.
May
  • General care: Drainage is vital for this plant. In heavy, water-retaining soil, plant on a mound or bed raised 20-30 cm, and keep the root collar above the surrounding soil level.
June
  • Watering: In a long drought, water deeply once a month.
  • General care: Produces white or pinkish flowers that are very attractive to bees. Leaves can be harvested.
July
  • Watering: In midsummer, deep watering every 15-20 days is enough. Established plants (over 2 years old) do not need watering in most years. Water the area around the roots to a depth of 15-20 cm.
  • Pruning: Prune as soon as flowering ends. Next year's flower buds form over the summer; late pruning reduces flowering.
  • General care: It gives its most intense aroma during this period.
August
  • Watering: In midsummer, deep watering every 15-20 days is enough. Established plants (over 2 years old) do not need watering in most years. Water the area around the roots to a depth of 15-20 cm.
  • Pruning: Light pruning can be continued.
September
  • Watering: In a long drought, water deeply once a month.
  • Pruning: A light pruning can be done to tidy plants that look untidy.
  • General care: Its seeds ripen.
October
  • Pruning: Avoid heavy pruning.
  • General care: The plant prepares for winter.
November
  • General care: In winter rains, make sure water does not pool in the root zone; for this plant, drainage is more critical than irrigation.
  • Frost risk: Protect newly planted seedlings during the first winter.
December
  • General care: Evergreen leaves continue to lose water in winter. Water thoroughly once before the soil freezes.
  • Pests & diseases: Make sure drainage is good against the risk of root rot.
