Fringed Rue Care

Ruta chalepensis

A very drought-tolerant, aromatic shrub that likes full sun and well-drained, poor soil. It is used in traditional medicine, but contact with the skin followed by sun exposure can cause dermatitis, so it should be handled with gloves.

Monthly care calendar

Timings are for a temperate Northern Hemisphere climate. In warmer areas tasks start earlier, in colder areas later; in the Southern Hemisphere shift them by six months.

January
  • Pruning: Not done; the main pruning should wait until spring.
  • Pests & diseases: Against the risk of root rot, make sure the soil is free-draining.
February
  • Pruning: Toward the end of the month, just before new growth starts, rejuvenate the plant with a hard prune of two-thirds.
  • General care: For new plantings, improve drainage by adding sand or gravel to the soil.
  • Frost risk: Protect newly planted seedlings from severe frosts.
March
  • Watering: Only for newly planted seedlings, 5-10 L/week if it stays dry; reduce if there is rain.
  • Pruning: Prune just before the shoots break. Because flowers form on this year's new shoots, hard pruning increases flowering.
  • General care: After pruning, new fresh shoots grow quickly.
April
  • General care: It opens yellow flowers. Its leaves can be a food source for swallowtail butterfly caterpillars.
May
  • Pruning: Cutting faded flowers (deadheading) makes the plant look neater.
  • General care: Drainage is vital for this plant. In heavy, water-retaining soil, plant on a mound or bed raised 20-30 cm, and keep the root collar above the surrounding soil level.
June
  • Watering: In a long drought, water deeply once a month.
  • Pruning: After flowering, a light pruning can be done.
  • General care: Seed capsules begin to form.
July
  • Watering: In midsummer, deep watering every 15-20 days is enough. Established plants (over 2 years old) do not need watering in most years. Water the area around the roots to a depth of 15-20 cm.
  • General care: Seed capsules develop.
August
  • Watering: In midsummer, deep watering every 15-20 days is enough. Established plants (over 2 years old) do not need watering in most years. Water the area around the roots to a depth of 15-20 cm.
September
  • Watering: In a long drought, water deeply once a month.
  • Pruning: If the plant looks untidy, light pruning can help it recover.
  • General care: Its seeds ripen and can be collected.
October
  • Pruning: Avoid heavy pruning.
  • General care: The plant prepares for winter.
November
  • General care: In winter rains, make sure water does not pool in the root zone; for this plant, drainage is more critical than irrigation.
  • Frost risk: Protect newly planted seedlings during the first winter.
December
  • General care: Evergreen leaves continue to lose water in winter. Water thoroughly once before the soil freezes.
  • Pests & diseases: Make sure drainage is good against the risk of root rot.
