Monthly care calendar

Timings are for a temperate Northern Hemisphere climate. In warmer areas tasks start earlier, in colder areas later; in the Southern Hemisphere shift them by six months.

January
  • General care: The plant is in dormancy; refresh the acidic mulch (pine needles) in the root zone.
  • Pests & diseases: Against the risk of root rot, make sure drainage is good.
February
  • Pruning: Not needed; flowering time is approaching.
  • General care: Flower buds begin to swell.
March
  • Watering: If the rains are insufficient, water with lime-free water (rainwater).
  • Fertilizing: A special fertilizer (containing ammonium sulfate) may be applied for acid-loving plants (do not overapply).
  • General care: Main flowering period; never use hard, limey tap water.
  • Pests & diseases: If chlorosis (leaf yellowing) begins, apply iron chelate.
April
  • Watering: Keep the soil moist with lime-free water.
  • Fertilizing: Not necessary (if done in March).
  • Pruning: After flowering ends, lightly cut the spent flowering branches to maintain the plant's form; do not cut into the woody parts.
  • General care: This is the best time for pruning.
May
  • Watering: Water young saplings regularly with lime-free water; mature plants are more hardy.
  • Pruning: This is the last chance for pruning.
  • General care: Period of rapid vegetative growth.
  • Pests & diseases: Start checking for spider mites.
June
  • Watering: For young saplings, one deep watering per week (with lime-free water); for mature plants, 1-2 times per month.
  • Plant protection: The spider mite population may increase.
  • General care: Heat stress begins; a mulch layer keeps the roots cool.
  • Pests & diseases: Chlorosis is the biggest problem in alkaline soils.
July
  • Watering: Continue watering.
  • General care: This is the hottest month; the plant may become stressed but is tolerant.
  • Pests & diseases: Leaf tip burn can be a sign of water stress or high salinity.
August
  • Watering: Continue watering.
September
  • Watering: Reduce watering as the weather cools.
  • General care: The best time for planting new seedlings; lower the pH by mixing plenty of pine needles, peat or sulfur into the soil.
October
  • Watering: Stop when the rains begin.
  • General care: Planting of seedlings can continue; add acidic mulch (pine needles) to the root zone.
  • Pests & diseases: Pay attention to drainage against root rot.
November
  • General care: It enters winter dormancy.
December
  • General care: The plant is resting.
