Monthly care calendar

Timings are for a temperate Northern Hemisphere climate. In warmer areas tasks start earlier, in colder areas later; in the Southern Hemisphere shift them by six months.

January
  • Watering: Not required, natural rainfall is sufficient.
  • Pests & diseases: Carry out general observation. Frost protection is not needed.
February
  • Pruning: Before the new shoots wake up, the plant can be pruned hard down to 15-20 cm above the ground to rejuvenate and shape it.
  • General care: Clear weeds.
March
  • Watering: If there is no rainfall, 5-7 L/plant every 2 weeks.
  • Fertilizing: Apply a layer of compost or slow-release balanced fertilizer (10-10-10 NPK) to the soil; do not overapply.
  • Pruning: Prune just before the shoots break. Because flowers form on this year's new shoots, hard pruning increases flowering.
  • Plant protection: Check the new shoots for aphids.
April
  • Watering: If there is no rainfall, water every 15 days.
May
  • Watering: If there is no rainfall, water once a week.
  • General care: Spread a 5-7 cm layer of mulch over the root zone; it retains soil moisture and suppresses weeds. Do not pile mulch against the trunk.
June
  • Watering: Water deeply twice a week; prefer infrequent and generous watering over small and frequent. Water around the roots to a depth of 15-20 cm.
  • Pests & diseases: Check the undersides of the leaves for rust.
July
  • Watering: Water deeply twice a week; prefer infrequent and generous watering over small and frequent. Water around the roots to a depth of 15-20 cm.
  • General care: The flowers begin turning into fruit (red at first).
  • Pests & diseases: Watch for water stress and leaf scorch (in sunny spots).
August
  • Watering: Water deeply twice a week; prefer infrequent and generous watering over small and frequent. Water around the roots to a depth of 15-20 cm.
  • General care: The fruits change color and take on a decorative appearance.
September

October
  • Watering: If there is no rainfall, water every 15 days.
November
