Monthly care calendar

Timings are for a temperate Northern Hemisphere climate. In warmer areas tasks start earlier, in colder areas later; in the Southern Hemisphere shift them by six months.

January
  • Watering: Not required, natural rainfall is sufficient.
  • General care: Make sure drainage is excellent for the winter rains.
  • Pests & diseases: The greatest risk is root rot, so avoid waterlogging. Frost protection is not needed; it is very hardy.
February
  • Pruning: You can remove branches that may have been damaged in winter.
  • Pests & diseases: Observe. Frost protection is not needed.
March
  • Watering: If there is no rainfall, every 2 weeks (3-5 L/m²).
  • Fertilizing: Not required, it prefers poor soils.
  • General care: Clear weeds.
  • Pests & diseases: Observe the new shoots.
April
  • Watering: If there is no rainfall, once a week (5 L/m²).
  • Fertilizing: Not needed; do not overdo it.
  • Plant protection: Aphids may be seen on the new shoots; if necessary, treat with neem oil.
  • General care: Watch the flower buds.
  • Pests & diseases: Check for aphids.
May
  • Watering: Once a week (5-7 L/m²); wait for the soil in the pot to dry out completely.
  • Pruning: Not needed; enjoy the flowers.
  • General care: Drainage is vital for this plant. In heavy, water-retaining soil, plant on a mound or bed raised 20-30 cm, and keep the root collar above the surrounding soil level.
June
  • Watering: In a long drought, water deeply once a month.
  • Pruning: As soon as the main flowering ends, lightly cut the plant back by about one-third. This keeps it from becoming woody and helps it stay compact.
  • General care: Watering once after pruning helps it recover.
July
  • Watering: In midsummer, deep watering every 15-20 days is enough. Established plants (over 2 years old) do not need watering in most years. Water the area around the roots to a depth of 15-20 cm.
  • Pruning: Prune as soon as flowering ends. Next year's flower buds form over the summer; late pruning reduces flowering.
  • General care: It can be propagated by semi-hardwood cuttings.
  • Pests & diseases: Avoid overwatering to prevent root rot.
August
  • Watering: In midsummer, deep watering every 15-20 days is enough. Established plants (over 2 years old) do not need watering in most years. Water the area around the roots to a depth of 15-20 cm.
September
  • Watering: In a long drought, water deeply once a month.
  • General care: New vegetative growth may be seen as the weather cools.
October
  • Watering: Not required, natural rainfall is sufficient.
  • Pests & diseases: Make sure drainage is good for the winter rains.
November
  • General care: In winter rains, make sure water does not pool in the root zone; for this plant, drainage is more critical than irrigation.
December
  • General care: Evergreen leaves continue to lose water in winter. Water thoroughly once before the soil freezes.
