Monthly care calendar

Timings are for a temperate Northern Hemisphere climate. In warmer areas tasks start earlier, in colder areas later; in the Southern Hemisphere shift them by six months.

  • Fertilizing: Not required, absolutely do not fertilize; do not overfeed.
  • General care: Make sure drainage is excellent; water must not pool.

April
  • Watering: If there is no rainfall, 5 L/plant once a month.
  • General care: Monitor its growth.
May
  • Watering: If there is no rainfall, 5 L/plant every 2-3 weeks.
  • General care: Drainage is vital for this plant. In heavy, water-retaining soil, plant on a mound or bed raised 20-30 cm, and keep the root collar above the surrounding soil level.
June
  • Watering: In a long drought, water deeply once a month.
  • General care: Do not disturb during the flowering period.
July
  • Watering: In midsummer, deep watering every 15-20 days is enough. Established plants (over 2 years old) do not need watering in most years. Water the area around the roots to a depth of 15-20 cm.
  • Pruning: Prune as soon as flowering ends. Next year's flower buds form over the summer; late pruning reduces flowering.
  • General care: Because it is endangered, collect its seeds and place them under protection if necessary.
  • Pests & diseases: Avoid overwatering against the risk of root rot.
August
  • Watering: In midsummer, deep watering every 15-20 days is enough. Established plants (over 2 years old) do not need watering in most years. Water the area around the roots to a depth of 15-20 cm.
  • General care: Control weeds.

  • Pests & diseases: Observe. Frost protection is not needed.
December
  • Watering: Not required, natural rainfall is sufficient.
  • General care: Prevent water from pooling.
  • Pests & diseases: Carry out general checks. Frost protection is not needed.
