Monthly care calendar

Timings are for a temperate Northern Hemisphere climate. In warmer areas tasks start earlier, in colder areas later; in the Southern Hemisphere shift them by six months.

January
  • Watering: Not required, natural rainfall is sufficient.
  • Plant protection: For winter control, dormant oil (mineral oil) can be considered.
  • General care: Keep the area around the roots clean.
  • Pests & diseases: Remove dead branches. There is no frost risk; it is very hardy.
February
  • Watering: Not required, natural rainfall is sufficient.
  • Pruning: To control unwanted spread, root pruning or installing a barrier can be done this month.
  • General care: Clear weeds.
  • Pests & diseases: Observe. There is no risk of frost.
March
  • Watering: If there is no rainfall, 5-10 L/plant every 2-3 weeks.
  • Fertilizing: Not needed. It fixes nitrogen, so do not overfeed.
  • Plant protection: Watch fresh shoots for the possibility of aphids; apply neem oil if necessary.
  • General care: Hoe the soil lightly.
  • Pests & diseases: Check for aphids.
April
  • Watering: Once a week, 10 L per plant; reduce if it rains.
  • General care: Watch its spread and limit it if necessary.
May
  • Watering: Once a week, 10-15 L per plant; reduce if it rains.
  • Pruning: Not needed; wait for flowering.
  • General care: Drainage is vital for this plant. In heavy, water-retaining soil, plant on a mound or bed raised 20-30 cm, and keep the root collar above the surrounding soil level.
June
  • Watering: In a long drought, water deeply once a month.
  • Pruning: Deadheading can extend the flowering period.
  • General care: Do not disturb the plant during the flowering period.
July
  • Watering: In midsummer, deep watering every 15-20 days is enough. Established plants (over 2 years old) do not need watering in most years. Water the area around the roots to a depth of 15-20 cm.
  • Pruning: Prune as soon as flowering ends. Next year's flower buds form over the summer; late pruning reduces flowering.
  • Plant protection: In hot and dry weather, the risk of spider mites increases. Apply a miticide if necessary.
  • General care: Clear away pruning debris.
  • Pests & diseases: Check for spider mites.
August
  • Watering: In midsummer, deep watering every 15-20 days is enough. Established plants (over 2 years old) do not need watering in most years. Water the area around the roots to a depth of 15-20 cm.
  • General care: Continue weed control.
  • Pests & diseases: After pruning, observe whether the plant is under stress.
September
  • Watering: In a long drought, water deeply once a month.
  • General care: To keep its spread under control, clear the shoots that come up at the edges.
  • Pests & diseases: Make sure the plant has good airflow to prevent fungal diseases from developing with the autumn rains.
October
  • Watering: 10 L/plant every two weeks, until the rains begin.
  • General care: Clear fallen leaves to prevent diseases from overwintering.
  • Pests & diseases: Avoid overwatering to prevent root rot.
November
  • Watering: Not required, natural rainfall is sufficient.
  • General care: In winter precipitation, make sure water does not collect in the root zone; for this plant, drainage is more critical than watering. Collect fallen leaves; many disease agents and pests overwinter under the leaves.
  • Pests & diseases: Carry out general cleaning.
December
  • Watering: Not required, natural rainfall is sufficient.
  • Plant protection: For winter control, Bordeaux mixture or dormant oil (mineral oil) can be considered.
  • General care: Keep the area around the plant clean.
  • Pests & diseases: Check the plant for winter pests.
