Monthly care calendar

Timings are for a temperate Northern Hemisphere climate. In warmer areas tasks start earlier, in colder areas later; in the Southern Hemisphere shift them by six months.

January
  • Watering: Not required, natural rainfall is sufficient.
  • General care: Keep the surrounding area clean.
  • Pests & diseases: Check for dead branches. To guard against frost, protect the roots of young plants with mulch during severe frosts.
February
  • Watering: Not required, natural rainfall is sufficient.
  • General care: Clear weeds.
  • Pests & diseases: Continue observing. Protect young plants from late frosts.
March
  • Watering: If there is no rainfall, 5 L/plant every 2-3 weeks.
  • Fertilizing: Not needed. This plant does not like fertilizer, so do not overfeed.
  • Pruning: Not needed; wait for flowering.
  • Plant protection: Watch fresh shoots for the possibility of aphids; apply neem oil if necessary.
  • General care: Aerate the soil lightly.
  • Pests & diseases: Check for aphids.
April
  • Watering: If there is no rainfall, 5-10 L/plant every 2 weeks.
  • General care: Do the final checks before flowering.
May
  • Watering: Once a week, 5-10 L per plant; reduce if it rains.
  • General care: Drainage is vital for this plant. In heavy, water-retaining soil, plant on a mound or bed raised 20-30 cm, and keep the root collar above the surrounding soil level.
June
  • Watering: In a long drought, water deeply once a month.
  • Pruning: After flowering ends, lightly cut spent flowers and shoot tips to maintain its form.
  • General care: Clear away pruning debris.
July
  • Watering: In midsummer, deep watering every 15-20 days is enough. Established plants (over 2 years old) do not need watering in most years. Water the area around the roots to a depth of 15-20 cm.
  • Pruning: Prune as soon as flowering ends. Next year's flower buds form over the summer; late pruning reduces flowering.
  • Plant protection: In hot and dry weather there may be a risk of spider mites; check if there is webbing or fading color on the leaves, and use a suitable miticide if necessary.
  • General care: Clear weeds.
  • Pests & diseases: To prevent root rot, make sure the soil dries out between waterings.
August
  • Watering: In midsummer, deep watering every 15-20 days is enough. Established plants (over 2 years old) do not need watering in most years. Water the area around the roots to a depth of 15-20 cm.
  • Plant protection: Continue checking for spider mites.
  • General care: Clear weeds.
  • Pests & diseases: Monitor for heat stress and watch for the risk of root rot.
September
  • Watering: In a long drought, water deeply once a month.
  • General care: For propagation from seed, seed pods can be collected.
October
  • Watering: Once a month, 5-10 L per plant; rainfall is usually sufficient.
  • General care: Clear fallen leaves.
  • Pests & diseases: Against the risk of root rot, make sure drainage is good.
November
  • Watering: Not required, natural rainfall is sufficient.
  • General care: In winter precipitation, make sure water does not collect in the root zone; for this plant, drainage is more critical than watering. Collect fallen leaves; many disease agents and pests overwinter under the leaves.
  • Pests & diseases: Carry out general cleaning.
December
  • Watering: Not required, natural rainfall is sufficient.
  • Plant protection: If there were problems in the previous season, dormant oil (mineral oil) can be considered.
  • General care: Keep the area around the plant clean.
  • Pests & diseases: Carry out general checks. There is no frost risk; it is very hardy.
