French Broom Care
Genista monspessulana
A fast-growing, drought-tolerant shrub that fixes nitrogen. It prefers full-sun areas and well-drained, poor soils; it is used in the landscape for erosion control and as an ornamental, and it can be invasive in some regions.
Monthly care calendar
Timings are for a temperate Northern Hemisphere climate. In warmer areas tasks start earlier, in colder areas later; in the Southern Hemisphere shift them by six months.
- Watering: Not required, natural rainfall is sufficient.
- Plant protection: Dormant oil (mineral oil) can be applied against potential scale insects.
- General care: Cover the area around the roots with mulch to reduce frost damage.
- Pests & diseases: Remove dead branches. Protect the root zone with mulch against frost.
- Watering: Not required, natural rainfall is sufficient.
- General care: Weeds can be cleared.
- Pests & diseases: Continue observing. Protect young plants against the danger of late frost.
- Watering: If there is no rainfall, 5-10 L/plant once a week.
- Fertilizing: If growth is weak, apply a low-nitrogen compound fertilizer (e.g., 5-10-10 NPK) to the soil (20-30 gr/plant); do not overfeed.
- Pruning: Not needed; wait for flowering.
- Plant protection: If aphids are seen, apply an insecticide containing neem oil.
- General care: Hoe the soil lightly.
- Pests & diseases: Check fresh shoots for aphids.
- Watering: Once a week, 10-15 L per plant; reduce if it rains.
- Plant protection: Check for spider mites; if necessary, use sulfur or a suitable acaricide.
- General care: Do not disturb the plant during the flowering period.
- Pests & diseases: Yellowing or webbing on the leaves can be a sign of spider mites.
- Watering: Once a week, 10-15 L per plant; can be increased with the heat, reduce if it rains.
- Pruning: When flowering ends, light shaping pruning can be done; remove dry and diseased branches.
- General care: Drainage is vital for this plant. In heavy, water-retaining soil, plant on a mound or bed raised 20-30 cm, and keep the root collar above the surrounding soil level.
- Watering: In a long drought, water deeply once a month.
- Pruning: Main pruning time. After flowering, prune the plant back by one-third to shape it and encourage rejuvenation.
- General care: After pruning, clean around the plant. This is a suitable time for propagation from cuttings.
- Pests & diseases: After pruning, check the wounds.
- Watering: In midsummer, deep watering every 15-20 days is enough. Established plants (over 2 years old) do not need watering in most years. Water the area around the roots to a depth of 15-20 cm.
- Pruning: Prune as soon as flowering ends. Next year's flower buds form over the summer; late pruning reduces flowering.
- Plant protection: In hot and dry weather, the risk of spider mites increases. Apply a miticide if necessary.
- General care: Mulch to preserve soil moisture.
- Pests & diseases: Check for spider mites (fine webbing and color change on the leaf).
- Watering: In midsummer, deep watering every 15-20 days is enough. Established plants (over 2 years old) do not need watering in most years. Water the area around the roots to a depth of 15-20 cm.
- General care: Continue weed control.
- Pests & diseases: Watch for signs of stress (leaf drop, etc.) and check the watering.
- Watering: In a long drought, water deeply once a month.
- General care: You can collect seeds for propagation.
- Pests & diseases: In humid weather, monitor the leaves for fungal diseases.
- Watering: 10 L/plant every two weeks is sufficient; rains generally begin.
- General care: Clear fallen leaves.
- Pests & diseases: Avoid overwatering to prevent root rot.
- Watering: Not required, natural rainfall is sufficient. If the soil dries out completely, 5-10 L per plant once a month.
- General care: In winter precipitation, make sure water does not collect in the root zone; for this plant, drainage is more critical than watering. Collect fallen leaves; many disease agents and pests overwinter under the leaves.
- Pests & diseases: Carry out general cleaning. Protect the roots with mulch against frost risk.
- Watering: Not required, natural rainfall is sufficient.
- Plant protection: For winter control, dormant oil (mineral oil) or Bordeaux mixture can be considered.
- General care: Keep the area around the plant clean.
- Pests & diseases: Check the plant for winter pests. In hard frosts, protect the root zone with mulch.
