Monthly care calendar

Timings are for a temperate Northern Hemisphere climate. In warmer areas tasks start earlier, in colder areas later; in the Southern Hemisphere shift them by six months.

January
  • General care: The plant is dormant. Make sure drainage is excellent.
February
  • General care: It is getting ready to wake.
March
  • Watering: Not needed. Spring rains are sufficient.
  • Fertilizing: Not required, it prefers poor soils.
  • General care: New shoots appear.
April
  • Watering: If necessary, light watering 1-2 times a month.
  • Pruning: Not done; it is flowering time.
  • General care: Flowering begins.
  • Pests & diseases: Monitor for aphids.
May
  • Watering: Water deeply once a week (15-20 L).
  • Pruning: After the flowers finish, lightly cut the flowering shoots to maintain the plant's form.
  • General care: Drainage is vital for this plant. In heavy, water-retaining soil, plant on a mound or bed raised 20-30 cm, and keep the root collar above the surrounding soil level.
  • Pests & diseases: Be careful about the risk of root rot.
June
  • Watering: In a long drought, water deeply once a month.
  • Pruning: If it was not done in May, this is the last chance for pruning.
  • Plant protection: Start checking for spider mites.
  • General care: Shading can be helpful to protect it from the afternoon sun.
  • Pests & diseases: The first signs of heat stress can begin.
July
  • Watering: In midsummer, deep watering every 15-20 days is enough. Established plants (over 2 years old) do not need watering in most years. Water the area around the roots to a depth of 15-20 cm.
  • Fertilizing: Never given.
  • Pruning: Prune as soon as flowering ends. Next year's flower buds form over the summer; late pruning reduces flowering.
  • Plant protection: The spider mite population may increase.
  • General care: This is the most challenging month; the plant must be kept cool and watered regularly to stay healthy.
  • Pests & diseases: Heat stress (leaf drop, yellowing) is the biggest threat.
August
  • Watering: In midsummer, deep watering every 15-20 days is enough. Established plants (over 2 years old) do not need watering in most years. Water the area around the roots to a depth of 15-20 cm.
  • Plant protection: Continue checking for spider mites.
  • General care: Try to keep the plant as cool as possible.
  • Pests & diseases: The plant may weaken due to stress.
September
  • Watering: In a long drought, water deeply once a month.
  • Pruning: Branches that dried out in summer can be cleared.
  • General care: This is the plant's recovery period.
October
  • Watering: Not needed; the rains begin.
  • General care: The most suitable time for planting new seedlings (if it is to be tried).
  • Pests & diseases: It sheds its leaves and prepares for winter dormancy.
November
  • General care: In winter precipitation, make sure water does not collect in the root zone; for this plant, drainage is more critical than watering. Collect fallen leaves; many disease agents and pests overwinter under the leaves.
  • Pests & diseases: It is dormant.
December
  • General care: The plant is fully dormant.
