Monthly care calendar

Timings are for a temperate Northern Hemisphere climate. In warmer areas tasks start earlier, in colder areas later; in the Southern Hemisphere shift them by six months.

January
  • Watering: Not required; winter precipitation is sufficient.
  • Fertilizing: Not needed. The plant produces its own nitrogen.
  • Pruning: Not needed. The best time for pruning is the end of the month.
  • General care: The dried seed pods remaining on the branches in winter can be decorative.
February
  • Watering: Not needed; rainfall is sufficient.
  • Pruning: Late month, before the plant wakes up, is the best time for the main pruning. To keep it fuller and flowering, cut back the branches by one-third or by half.
  • General care: Clear away pruning debris.
March
  • Watering: Not required, spring rainfall is sufficient. Only newly planted saplings should be watered.
  • Pruning: Prune just before the shoots break. Because flowers form on this year's new shoots, hard pruning increases flowering.
  • Plant protection: Check the newly emerging shoots for aphids; they are generally not a problem.
  • General care: New shoots emerge quickly.
April
  • Pruning: Not needed. Flowering begins.
  • General care: Produces yellow, pea-like flowers.
May
  • General care: Flowering continues and the first seed pods begin to form.
June
  • Watering: In a long drought, water deeply once a month.
  • General care: Swollen, green seed pods (bladder pods) become prominent.
July
  • Watering: In midsummer, deep watering every 15-20 days is enough. Established plants (over 2 years old) do not need watering in most years. Water the area around the roots to a depth of 15-20 cm.
  • General care: The seed pods continue to grow.
August
  • Watering: In midsummer, deep watering every 15-20 days is enough. Established plants (over 2 years old) do not need watering in most years. Water the area around the roots to a depth of 15-20 cm.
  • General care: The seed pods begin to take on a papery texture.
September
  • Watering: In a long drought, water deeply once a month.
  • General care: The papery seed pods are at their most decorative. It is a very suitable time to plant new seedlings. To collect the seeds, wait for the pods to dry.
October
  • Watering: Not required; autumn precipitation is sufficient.
  • General care: The leaves begin to turn yellow and fall. The seed pods remain on the branches.
November
  • Watering: Not needed; rainfall is sufficient.
  • General care: Collect fallen leaves; many disease agents and pests overwinter under leaves.
December
  • General care: The plant is in full dormancy.
  • Pests & diseases: The only risk is the roots staying constantly in water in places with poor drainage.
