Siberian Pea Shrub Care

Caragana arborescens

A deciduous shrub of Siberian origin, extremely tolerant of severe cold. It cannot adapt to Izmir's long, hot, dry summers and mild winters; growing it in this climate is not recommended and the plant will probably suffer stress-related problems.

Hardy · -40 °C / -40 °F

Monthly care calendar

Timings are for a temperate Northern Hemisphere climate. In warmer areas tasks start earlier, in colder areas later; in the Southern Hemisphere shift them by six months.

January
  • Watering: Winter precipitation is sufficient.
  • Fertilizing: Not needed. The plant produces its own nitrogen.
  • Pruning: Not needed. Only remove branches that are clearly dead or broken.
  • General care: The plant is dormant but may weaken because it has not received enough winter chill.
  • Pests & diseases: Check for dieback.
February
  • Watering: If there is no rainfall, water once a month (20-30 L/m²).
  • General care: Dormancy period continues.
March
  • Watering: Keep the soil moist; if there is no rain, water every 15 days (30 L/m²).
  • Fertilizing: Not needed. Simply mixing compost into the soil is enough.
  • Pruning: Not needed; wait for flowering.
  • General care: Mulch (bark, etc.) to keep the roots cool in the summer heat.
April
  • Watering: Water once a week (30 L/m²).
  • Pruning: Flowers bloom this month; wait for the flowers to finish before pruning.
  • Plant protection: Check for leaf pests.
  • General care: Make sure the plant is in afternoon shade.
  • Pests & diseases: Aphids or other leaf-sucking insects may be seen.
May
  • Watering: Continue regular watering once a week.
  • Pruning: Right after flowering ends, prune to shape the plant and control its size.
  • General care: Maintain the mulch layer.
June
  • Watering: In a long drought, water deeply once a month.
  • Pruning: The pruning period has passed.
  • Plant protection: Hot and dry weather increases the risk of spider mites. Because the plant goes into stress, it is very susceptible to pests.
  • General care: The plant will likely show signs of heat stress (yellowing leaves, leaf drop).
  • Pests & diseases: Spider mites (webbing and discoloration on the leaves) are the biggest threat.
July
  • Watering: In midsummer, deep watering every 15-20 days is enough. Established plants (over 2 years old) do not need watering in most years. Water the area around the roots to a depth of 15-20 cm.
  • Pruning: Prune as soon as flowering ends. Next year's flower buds form over the summer; late pruning reduces flowering.
  • Plant protection: Continue checking for spider mites.
  • General care: This is the most challenging month for keeping the plant healthy.
  • Pests & diseases: Severe heat stress can lead to branch dieback and death.
August
  • Watering: In midsummer, deep watering every 15-20 days is enough. Established plants (over 2 years old) do not need watering in most years. Water the area around the roots to a depth of 15-20 cm.
  • Plant protection: Continue checking for spider mites.
  • General care: The leaves may look unhealthy; this is caused by climate stress.
  • Pests & diseases: A plant under stress is open to all kinds of pests and diseases.
September
  • Watering: In a long drought, water deeply once a month.
  • Plant protection: Spider mites may still be active; check.
  • General care: You can clear the branches that dried out or died in summer.
  • Pests & diseases: Identify the damage that occurred over the summer.
October
  • Watering: Reduce watering when the rains begin and stop at the end of the month.
  • General care: The plant begins to shed its leaves. Clear away fallen leaves.
November
  • Watering: Not needed; rainfall is sufficient.
  • General care: Collect fallen leaves; many disease agents and pests overwinter under leaves.
December
  • General care: Dormancy period.
