Monthly care calendar

Timings are for a temperate Northern Hemisphere climate. In warmer areas tasks start earlier, in colder areas later; in the Southern Hemisphere shift them by six months.

January
  • Watering: If there is no rainfall, water deeply once a month (20-30 L/m²).
  • Pruning: Do not prune; flower buds are on last year's wood. Only remove broken or dead branches.
  • General care: You can clear its surroundings to bring the spreading root suckers under control.
February
  • Watering: If there is no rainfall, water once a month.
  • Pruning: Do not prune.
  • General care: You can remove root suckers.
March
  • Watering: Keep the soil moist; if there is no rain, water every 15 days (30 L/m²).
  • Fertilizing: At the start of the month, apply a slow-release balanced NPK (e.g., 10-10-10) fertilizer or plenty of compost (do not overapply).
  • Pruning: Do not prune. The plant is preparing to flower.
  • General care: Spread a 10 cm layer of mulch (bark, compost) to keep the roots cool and moist.
April
  • Watering: If there is no rainfall, water every 15 days.
  • Pruning: Do not prune. Flowering period.
  • General care: Flowers begin to open.
May
  • Watering: If there is no rainfall, water once a week.
  • Pruning: Do not prune. Flowering is at its peak.
  • General care: Spread a 5-7 cm layer of mulch over the root zone; it retains soil moisture and suppresses weeds. Do not pile mulch against the trunk.
June
  • Watering: Water deeply twice a week; prefer infrequent and generous watering over small and frequent. Water around the roots to a depth of 15-20 cm.
  • Pruning: **The best time to prune is this month.** Shape the plant immediately after the main flowering ends, thin out old branches, and keep its size under control.
  • General care: Maintain the mulch layer.
  • Pests & diseases: Leaf scorch (sunburn) and water stress are the biggest risks.
July
  • Watering: Water deeply twice a week; prefer infrequent and generous watering over small and frequent. Water around the roots to a depth of 15-20 cm.
  • Pruning: Prune as soon as flowering ends. Next year's flower buds form over the summer; late pruning reduces flowering.
  • General care: Keep it in a position sheltered from midday sun; scorching at the leaf edges is a sign of burn.
August
  • Watering: Water deeply twice a week; prefer infrequent and generous watering over small and frequent. Water around the roots to a depth of 15-20 cm.
  • General care: Make sure the plant is in afternoon shade.
September
  • Watering: If there is no rainfall, water once a week.
  • Fertilizing: None; let the plant prepare for winter.
  • Pruning: Do not prune. New shoots may be damaged by frost.
  • General care: A good time for planting new seedlings. Warm soil and approaching rains support rooting.
October
  • Watering: If there is no rainfall, water every 15 days.
  • General care: The leaves begin to turn yellow and fall.
November
  • Watering: Not required; autumn precipitation is sufficient.
  • General care: Collect fallen leaves; many disease agents and pests overwinter under leaves.
December
  • Watering: Not needed. If a dry spell occurs, water once a month.
  • General care: The plant is in full dormancy.
