Garden Care Guide

Zoysia Grass Care

Tolerates sunny and lightly shaded areas, is very resistant to drought and forms a dense turf. Because it grows slowly it needs little maintenance, and it is excellent for hot regions such as the Aegean and the Mediterranean.

Half-hardy

Monthly care calendar

Timings are for a temperate Northern Hemisphere climate. In warmer areas tasks start earlier, in colder areas later; in the Southern Hemisphere shift them by six months.

April
  • Fertilizing: Base the rate on the soil analysis (2-2.5 g pure nitrogen/m²). If there is no analysis, about three weeks after full greening, calculate only the amount of pure nitrogen; convert the grams of product according to the nitrogen percentage on the package. Skip if: the lawn is partly dormant, under disease/drought stress, or nitrogen has been applied in the last 4–6 weeks.
  • General care: Mow with a sharp blade without letting the lawn rise above the 3.8-6.4 cm range, and never remove more than one third of the leaf length in a single mowing (3.8-6.4 cm/m²). Do not mow wet or stressed lawn. Skip if: the lawn is wet, dormant, newly laid, or under heat/drought stress.
May
  • Watering: Apply the weekly total, including rainfall, to the root zone (12.5-25 L/m², upper limit 25.4 L/m²). A bluish-gray color on the leaves, curling, or footprints that remain in the grass support the need for watering; if there is surface runoff, split the total into short cycles. Skip if: the total of the last 7 days of rainfall and irrigation is 12.5 L/m² or more and the root zone is moist. If the lawn is dormant or the soil is saturated.
