Garden Care Guide

Chinese Wisteria Care

Wisteria sinensis

A very vigorous and long-lived vine grown for its fragrant, showy flower clusters that open in spring. It grows strong enough to break weak support structures (fences, pergolas, roofs, etc.). For abundant flowering, full sun and regular pruning twice a year are essential.

Monthly care calendar

Timings are for a temperate Northern Hemisphere climate. In warmer areas tasks start earlier, in colder areas later; in the Southern Hemisphere shift them by six months.

January
  • Watering: Not required; the plant is dormant and winter rains are sufficient.
  • Pruning: This is the best time for main pruning. Counting from the main framework branches, cut back the side branches that grew the previous summer firmly, leaving 2-3 buds. This encourages flowering.
  • General care: Clear away pruning debris to guard against disease.
February
  • Pruning: This is the last chance for winter pruning. It must be finished before the buds swell.
  • General care: The plant is preparing to wake up. Flower buds become more distinct.
March
  • Watering: Water a newly planted specimen more often than established plants during its first year, as its root system is still shallow.
  • Fertilizing: Apply a balanced fertilizer or well-rotted organic fertilizer once when it wakes from dormancy.
  • Plant protection: Check the newly emerging fresh leaves for aphids.
  • General care: Good time for planting and transplanting.
  • Frost risk: Flower buds can be sensitive to a rare late frost.
April
  • Watering: If there is no rainfall, water every 15 days. Water newly planted plants more often than established plants during the first year; the root system is still shallow.
  • Fertilizing: If flowering is weak, a phosphorus- and potassium-heavy (bloom-boosting) fertilizer can be given. Avoid nitrogen fertilizers. Do not overapply.
  • Plant protection: If symptoms spread and treatment is needed, consult a licensed plant-protection supplier or an agronomist. Plant protection products are regulated; follow local rules.
  • General care: Suitable period for planting and transplanting. Flowering begins.
  • Pests & diseases: Look for aphids (green or black clusters of small insects) on fresh shoot tips. If there are only a few, you can knock them off with a strong jet of water.
May
  • Watering: If there is no rainfall, water once a week.
  • Pruning: After flowering ends, a light cleanup pruning can be done, but wait for the main summer pruning.
  • Plant protection: If symptoms spread and treatment is needed, consult a licensed plant-protection supplier or an agronomist. Plant protection products are regulated; follow local rules.
  • General care: Flowering continues. Spread mulch 5-7 cm thick over the root zone; it conserves soil moisture and suppresses weeds. Do not pile mulch against the trunk.
  • Pests & diseases: Look for aphids (green or black clusters of small insects) on fresh shoot tips. If there are only a few, you can knock them off with a strong jet of water.
June
  • Watering: Water deeply twice a week; prefer infrequent and generous watering over small and frequent. The area around the roots should be wetted to a depth of 20-30 cm.
  • Pruning: Do shaping and hedge pruning. Two-stage pruning is essential: in July-August, cut the summer shoots back to 5-6 leaves; in January-February, prune the same branches back to 2-3 buds. Flower buds form on short branches; long lateral branches do not flower.
  • Plant protection: If symptoms spread and treatment is needed, consult a licensed plant-protection supplier or an agronomist. Plant protection products are regulated; follow local rules.
  • General care: The plant grows very aggressively. Train the shoots onto a support structure or prevent them from spreading into unwanted areas.
  • Pests & diseases: Look for aphids (green or black clusters of small insects) on fresh shoot tips. If there are only a few, you can knock them off with a strong jet of water.
July
  • Watering: Water deeply twice a week; prefer infrequent and generous watering over small and frequent. The area around the roots should be wetted to a depth of 20-30 cm.
  • Pruning: The second major pruning, SUMMER PRUNING, is done this month. Shorten all the long, green shoots (whips) that grew that year so that 5-6 leaves/buds remain. This both controls the plant and encourages next year's flower buds.
  • General care: This pruning directs the plant's energy toward woody branches and flower bud production.
August
  • Watering: Water deeply twice a week; prefer infrequent and generous watering over small and frequent. The area around the roots should be wetted to a depth of 20-30 cm.
  • Pruning: If summer pruning has not been done, the beginning of the month is the last chance.
  • General care: The plant gradually prepares for winter.
  • Pests & diseases: Check the general health of the plant.
September
  • Watering: If there is no rainfall, water once a week.
  • Pruning: Do the last formative pruning of the season; do not let it put out new shoots before frost.
  • General care: The plant is quiet. The most important task is to plan for winter pruning. It is a good month to plant new young trees (choose grafted saplings).
October
  • Watering: If there is no rainfall, water every 15 days. Water newly planted plants more often than established plants during the first year; the root system is still shallow.
  • General care: Good time for planting and transplanting.
November
  • Watering: Water a newly planted specimen more often than established plants during its first year, as its root system is still shallow.
  • General care: Good time for planting and transplanting.
December
  • Pruning: You can plan for winter pruning.
  • General care: The plant is fully dormant.
