California Fan Palm Care
Washingtonia filifera
This palm, native to desert oases, is extremely tolerant of full sun, heat and drought, which makes it ideal for Izmir's climate. It is also called 'hairy' because of the thread-like fibers on its young leaves. If the dead leaves are not pruned, they form a 'skirt' around the trunk.
Monthly care calendar
Timings are for a temperate Northern Hemisphere climate. In warmer areas tasks start earlier, in colder areas later; in the Southern Hemisphere shift them by six months.
- Watering: Not required; the plant is dormant and winter rains are sufficient.
- Frost risk: In hard and prolonged frosts, cover the root zone with mulch or dry leaves; also protect young plants. It is damaged below about -8 °C.
- Fertilizing: At the end of the month, just before growth begins, a slow-release palm fertilizer high in potassium (K) and magnesium (Mg) can be applied. Do not overfeed.
- Pruning: It does not need formative pruning and its top should not be cut. Only remove dry, broken, and diseased branches. Only remove dead leaves; do not cut healthy leaves. The leaf edges on the fronds are sharply toothed; wear protective gloves. Leaving the dead leaves provides insulation for the trunk.
- General care: The plant is preparing to wake up.
- Pests & diseases: Make sure drainage is good against root rot.
- Frost risk: In hard and prolonged frosts, cover the root zone with mulch or dry leaves; also protect young plants. It is damaged below about -8 °C.
- Watering: As rainfall decreases, water newly planted seedlings once a week. It is generally not needed for established trees.
- Fertilizing: Apply a balanced fertilizer as the plant emerges from dormancy.
- Pruning: This is the ideal time to clear the skirt of dry leaves around the trunk. Never cut green or horizontal leaves.
- Plant protection: If symptoms spread and treatment is needed, consult a licensed plant-protection supplier or an agronomist. Plant protection products are regulated; follow local rules.
- General care: A suitable month for new planting.
- Pests & diseases: Check the branches and trunk for brown, fixed bumps (scale insects).
- Watering: Water a newly planted specimen more often than established plants during its first year, as its root system is still shallow.
- Pruning: If needed, carry out a final cleanup pruning at the start of the month.
- Plant protection: Be careful about scale insects.
- General care: Good time for planting and transplanting.
- Watering: Water a newly planted specimen more often than established plants during its first year, as its root system is still shallow.
- Plant protection: If symptoms spread and treatment is needed, consult a licensed plant-protection supplier or an agronomist. Plant protection products are regulated; follow local rules.
- General care: Suitable period for planting and transplanting. Drainage is critical for this plant. In heavy, water-retaining soil, plant on a mound or bed raised 20-30 cm; the root collar should remain above the surrounding soil level.
- Pests & diseases: Check the branches and trunk for brown, fixed bumps (scale insects).
- Watering: In a long drought, water deeply once a month. Water newly planted specimens more often than established plants during the first year; the root system is still shallow.
- Fertilizing: Apply the second fertilizer dose during the growing season. Do not fertilize after August; late growth will not survive winter.
- General care: Good time for planting and transplanting.
- Watering: In midsummer, deep watering every 15-20 days is enough. Established plants (over 2 years old) do not need watering in most years. Water slowly until the soil is wet to a depth of 30 cm.
- Plant protection: If symptoms spread and treatment is needed, consult a licensed plant-protection supplier or an agronomist. Plant protection products are regulated; follow local rules.
- General care: It is a very hardy plant.
- Pests & diseases: In hot and dry weather, look on the undersides of the leaves for fine webbing and speckled yellowing (spider mites). Washing the leaves during the cool hours reduces their numbers.

- General care: The plant gradually prepares for winter.

- Watering: In a long drought, water deeply once a month.
- Pruning: Not needed. Only if a leaf has dried out completely during summer and hangs down, it can be cut for aesthetic purposes.
- General care: The tree is slowing its growth as autumn begins. This is a good time to plant new trees.
- Pests & diseases: Observe trees that were stressed during the summer for signs of weakness.
- Watering: Stop watering completely as the weather cools and rainfall begins.
- General care: The suitable period for new plantings continues.
- Pests & diseases: Make sure water does not collect in the root zone with the autumn rains.
- General care: In winter rains, make sure water does not pool in the root zone; for this plant, drainage is more critical than irrigation.
- General care: Evergreen leaves continue to lose water in winter. Water thoroughly once before the soil freezes.
- Frost risk: In hard and prolonged frosts, cover the root zone with mulch or dry leaves; also protect young plants. It is damaged below about -8 °C.
