Mountain Hemlock Care
Tsuga mertensiana
Native to high-altitude, cool and snowy mountains; it needs cool air, humidity and constantly wet-cool soil. It cannot tolerate heat, drought or humid heat at all, so it is absolutely NOT suitable for Izmir's climate and keeping it alive is almost impossible.
Monthly care calendar
Timings are for a temperate Northern Hemisphere climate. In warmer areas tasks start earlier, in colder areas later; in the Southern Hemisphere shift them by six months.
- Watering: Not required; the plant is dormant and winter rains are sufficient.
- Pruning: Not needed. Keeping its natural form is best. Just remove clearly dead or broken branches.
- General care: Spread a thick layer of mulch (bark, pine needles) around the base to protect its roots from frost and drying winds.
- Frost risk: Fully frost-hardy; heat is the problem.
- Fertilizing: At the end of the month, before new growth starts, a slow-release fertilizer for acid-loving plants (such as rhododendron fertilizer) can be applied. Do not overfeed.
- Pruning: It does not need formative pruning and its top should not be cut. Only remove dry, broken, and diseased branches.
- General care: Renew the mulch layer.
- Pests & diseases: Make sure drainage is good against root rot.
- Watering: As soon as the rains stop, start keeping the soil constantly moist; water 2-3 times a week.
- Fertilizing: If fertilizing has not been done, it can be done at the beginning of the month.
- Plant protection: Check the newly emerging shoots for pests.
- General care: Definitely not suitable for new planting; the plant becomes stressed.
- Pests & diseases: In alkaline soils, yellowing of the leaves (chlorosis) may appear.
- Watering: If there is no rainfall, water every 15 days.
- Plant protection: As temperatures rise, start checking the undersides of the leaves for spider mites.
- General care: Misting its leaves with water is beneficial for increasing humidity.
- Pests & diseases: Browning at the leaf tips is a sign of water stress or low humidity.
- Watering: If there is no rainfall, water once a week.
- Plant protection: It is very susceptible to spider mites. To prevent them, keep the plant and its surroundings humid. Use a miticide if necessary.
- General care: Spread a 5-7 cm layer of mulch over the root zone; it retains soil moisture and suppresses weeds. Do not pile mulch against the trunk.
- Pests & diseases: Spider mites are the biggest threat. Check the leaves for discoloration and fine webs.
- Watering: Water deeply twice a week; prefer infrequent and generous watering over small and frequent. The root zone should be wetted to a depth of 30-40 cm.
- Plant protection: Continue controlling spider mites.
- General care: Take care that the plant does not become stressed in extreme temperatures.
- Pests & diseases: Sudden, widespread yellowing is a sign of water stress or a root problem.
- Watering: Water deeply twice a week; prefer infrequent and generous watering over small and frequent. The root zone should be wetted to a depth of 30-40 cm.
- General care: Keep it in a position sheltered from midday sun; scorching at the leaf edges is a sign of burn.
- Pests & diseases: Sunburn (brown, dry spots on the leaves) and heat stress can be fatal.
- Watering: Water deeply twice a week; prefer infrequent and generous watering over small and frequent. The root zone should be wetted to a depth of 30-40 cm.
- General care: The plant gradually begins to recover.
- Pests & diseases: Check the general health of the plant.
- Watering: If there is no rainfall, water once a week.
- Pruning: Not done; a stressed plant is not pruned.
- Plant protection: The spider mite population may still be active; do one last check. Keeping the plant humid is the best defense.
- General care: Keep caring for the plant so that it recovers from summer stress. Check the mulch in the root zone and add more if needed.
- Pests & diseases: Assess the stress that occurred over the summer and possible pest damage. If it has survived, that is a great achievement.
- Watering: If there is no rainfall, water every 15 days.
- General care: The plant prepares for winter.
- Pests & diseases: Make sure water does not collect in the root zone with the autumn rains.
- Watering: Rainfall is usually sufficient.
- General care: The plant enters winter dormancy. Apply a protective mulch layer at its base.
- General care: Evergreen leaves continue to lose water in winter. Water thoroughly once before the soil freezes.
