Bald Cypress Care
Taxodium distichum
One of the rare conifers that sheds its leaves (needles) in winter. It tolerates plenty of sun, acidic and wet soils, and even standing water. In dry-summer climates such as Izmir it can survive with generous and regular irrigation.
Monthly care calendar
Timings are for a temperate Northern Hemisphere climate. In warmer areas tasks start earlier, in colder areas later; in the Southern Hemisphere shift them by six months.
- Watering: Not required; the plant is dormant and winter rains are sufficient.
- Pruning: Structural pruning is the best time to clear broken, dead or unwanted lower branches.
- Plant protection: Not required, it is usually trouble-free.
- Pests & diseases: Check the trunk and branches.
- Pruning: It does not need formative pruning and its top should not be cut. Only remove dry, broken, and diseased branches.
- General care: The plant is preparing to wake up.
- Watering: As rainfall decreases, start keeping the soil moist. Young seedlings in particular should be watered regularly.
- Fertilizing: If the soil is very limy (alkaline), an acid-containing or iron-sulfate fertilizer can be applied to prevent iron chlorosis (yellowing). Do not overapply.
- General care: Soft, light green new needles emerge.
- Pests & diseases: In alkaline soils, check whether the leaves are yellowing (chlorosis).
- Watering: If there is no rainfall, water 1-2 times a week.
- General care: Applying mulch to the soil surface helps preserve moisture and keep the soil cool.
- Watering: Water 2-3 times a week. The root zone should be wetted to a depth of 30-40 cm.
- Plant protection: In very hot and dry conditions, check for spider mites.
- General care: Spread a 5-7 cm layer of mulch over the root zone; it retains soil moisture and suppresses weeds. Do not pile mulch against the trunk.
- Pests & diseases: Water stress can cause leaf drop and dieback.
- Watering: Water deeply 3-4 times a week, early in the morning. The root zone should be wetted to a depth of 30-40 cm. Frequent shallow watering pulls the roots to the surface.
- Plant protection: Continue pest control.
- General care: Abundant irrigation maintains healthy growth.
