Japanese Pagoda Tree Care
Sophora japonica
A popular ornamental and shade tree that loves full sun and is extremely tolerant of drought, heat and urban pollution. It is decorative with its fragrant white flowers that open in late summer and interesting seed pods; it is very easy to care for.
Monthly care calendar
Timings are for a temperate Northern Hemisphere climate. In warmer areas tasks start earlier, in colder areas later; in the Southern Hemisphere shift them by six months.
- Pruning: Main pruning time. Carry out structural pruning on young trees (selecting the leader). On mature trees, remove only dead, diseased or rubbing branches.
- Plant protection: Apply dormant mineral oil if needed.
- General care: Interesting, bead-like seed pods can stay on the tree throughout winter.
- Pests & diseases: Check branches for canker symptoms (sunken areas, color change in the bark).
- Fertilizing: If needed, a slow-release balanced fertilizer may be applied, but do not overfeed.
- Pruning: While dormant, remove dry, broken, crossing and inward-growing branches so that air and light reach the inside of the crown. It blooms in late summer; fallen flowers and sticky fruits make the walkway slippery.
- General care: A suitable month for planting new seedlings.
- Frost risk: Protect newly planted seedlings from severe frosts.
- Watering: Water a newly planted specimen more often than established plants during its first year, as its root system is still shallow.
- General care: Good time for planting and transplanting.
- Watering: Continue watering new seedlings. Not needed for mature trees.
- Plant protection: If symptoms spread and treatment is needed, consult a licensed plant-protection supplier or an agronomist. Plant protection products are regulated; follow local rules.
- General care: It leafs out quickly.
- Pests & diseases: Look for aphids (green or black clusters of small insects) on fresh shoot tips. If there are only a few, you can knock them off with a strong jet of water.
