Quaking Aspen Care
Populus tremula
A deciduous tree known for its leaves that tremble in the slightest breeze and its bright yellow autumn color. It spreads rapidly by root suckers. It likes cool and moist climates; it is not suitable for the hot, dry Mediterranean climate, where it becomes stressed and short-lived.
Monthly care calendar
Timings are for a temperate Northern Hemisphere climate. In warmer areas tasks start earlier, in colder areas later; in the Southern Hemisphere shift them by six months.
- Pruning: Main pruning time. Remove dry, weak, diseased and hazardous branches to ensure the tree's structure and safety.
- General care: Keep spread under control by removing basal shoots (suckers) coming from the root.
- Pests & diseases: Check the trunk for canker and fungal conks.
- Pruning: While dormant, remove dry, broken, crossing and inward-growing branches so that air and light reach the inside of the crown.
- Plant protection: A protective copper-based fungicide can be applied to the trunk and branches.
- General care: Continue removing basal shoots.
- Watering: Start watering as the soil begins to dry (30-40 L/tree per week).
- Fertilizing: Usually not needed. In very poor soils, young trees may be given a nitrogen (N)-dominant fertilizer.
- Plant protection: Monitor for aphids (Aphidoidea).
- General care: The buds burst and leafing out begins. A suitable time for planting new saplings.
- Frost risk: Young shoots may be affected by severe late frosts.
- Watering: If there is no rainfall, water 1-2 times a week.
- Plant protection: If symptoms spread and treatment is needed, consult a licensed plant-protection supplier or an agronomist. Plant protection products are regulated; follow local rules.
- General care: Rapid growth period. Remove basal shoots as they appear.
- Pests & diseases: Look for aphids (green or black clusters of small insects) on fresh shoot tips. If there are only a few, you can knock them off with a strong jet of water.
- Watering: Water 2-3 times a week. The root zone should be wetted to a depth of 30-40 cm.
- Pruning: Remove basal shoots.
- Plant protection: If symptoms spread and treatment is needed, consult a licensed plant-protection supplier or an agronomist. Plant protection products are regulated; follow local rules.
- General care: Spread a 5-7 cm layer of mulch over the root zone; it retains soil moisture and suppresses weeds. Do not pile mulch against the trunk.
- Pests & diseases: Check fresh shoot tips for aphids (small clusters of green or black insects). If there are few, you can knock them off with a strong spray of water. Check the undersides of the leaves for orange-brown pustules (rust).
- Watering: Water deeply 3-4 times a week, early in the morning. The root zone should be wetted to a depth of 30-40 cm. Frequent shallow watering pulls the roots to the surface.
- Plant protection: If symptoms spread and treatment is needed, consult a licensed plant-protection supplier or an agronomist. Plant protection products are regulated; follow local rules.
- General care: Water stress weakens the tree and makes it susceptible to diseases (especially cankers).

- Watering: If there is no rainfall, water 1-2 times a week.
- General care: The leaves turn bright yellow and begin to fall. Collecting and destroying diseased leaves protects the following year.
- General care: Collect fallen leaves; many disease agents and pests overwinter under leaves.
- Pruning: Once the tree is fully dormant, major pruning can begin toward the end of the month.
- General care: Full dormancy period.
