Garden Care Guide

Date Palm Care

Phoenix dactylifera

One of the key trees of hot, dry climates, grown for its edible, sweet fruit (dates). For fruit production it needs plenty of sun and high summer temperatures. Because female and male trees are separate, pollination is required for commercial production; it is susceptible to the Red Palm Weevil.

Half-hardy · -8 °C / 18 °F

Monthly care calendar

Timings are for a temperate Northern Hemisphere climate. In warmer areas tasks start earlier, in colder areas later; in the Southern Hemisphere shift them by six months.

January
  • Pruning: Not recommended; wait for warm, dry weather for pruning.
  • General care: Suckers (offshoots) coming from the base of the roots can be removed.
  • Pests & diseases: Watch the trunk and crown for the Red Palm Weevil (Rhynchophorus ferrugineus).
  • Frost risk: In hard and prolonged frosts, cover the root zone with mulch or dry leaves; also protect young plants. It is damaged below about -8 °C.
February
  • Pruning: It does not need formative pruning and its top should not be cut. Only remove dry, broken, and diseased branches. Only remove dead, broken, or hanging leaves; do not cut healthy leaves. Leaving the dead leaves at the bottom insulates the trunk; do not clear them all at once.
  • General care: Dormancy continues. Removal of root suckers can continue.
  • Pests & diseases: Red Palm Weevil traps can be checked.
  • Frost risk: In hard and prolonged frosts, cover the root zone with mulch or dry leaves; also protect young plants. It is damaged below about -8 °C.
March
  • Watering: If necessary (if there is no rain), water deeply every 2-3 weeks (80-100 L/tree).
  • Fertilizing: Apply a balanced fertilizer when it wakes from dormancy. Because yield and fruit quality depend on nutrient balance, having a soil analysis done is especially useful for this plant.
  • Plant protection: If symptoms spread and treatment is needed, consult a licensed plant-protection supplier or an agronomist. Plant protection products are regulated; follow local rules.
  • General care: Flowering period. For fruit set, pollen from male flowers must be applied to female flowers by hand (pollination).
  • Pests & diseases: Check the branches and trunk for brown, fixed bumps (scale insects).
April
  • Watering: Water a newly planted specimen more often than established plants during its first year, as its root system is still shallow.
  • Plant protection: Control of the Red Palm Weevil continues.
  • General care: Good time for planting and transplanting.
May
  • Watering: Water a newly planted specimen more often than established plants during its first year, as its root system is still shallow.
  • Pruning: This is the best time for pruning. Only remove leaves that are completely dry and hanging down.
  • Plant protection: If symptoms spread and treatment is needed, consult a licensed plant-protection supplier or an agronomist. Plant protection products are regulated; follow local rules.
  • General care: Suitable period for planting and transplanting. Drainage is critical for this plant. In heavy, water-retaining soil, plant on a mound or bed raised 20-30 cm; the root collar should remain above the surrounding soil level.
  • Pests & diseases: Check the branches and trunk for brown, fixed bumps (scale insects).
June
  • Watering: In a long drought, water deeply once a month. Water newly planted specimens more often than established plants during the first year; the root system is still shallow.
  • Fertilizing: Apply the second fertilizer dose during the growing season. Do not fertilize after August; late growth will not survive winter.
  • Plant protection: If symptoms spread and treatment is needed, consult a licensed plant-protection supplier or an agronomist. Plant protection products are regulated; follow local rules.
  • General care: Good time for planting and transplanting.
  • Pests & diseases: Check the undersides of the leaves for whitefly clusters. A yellow sticky trap is the easiest way to monitor density.
July
  • Watering: In midsummer, deep watering every 15-20 days is enough. Established plants (over 2 years old) do not need watering in most years. Water slowly until the soil is wet to a depth of 30 cm.
  • Plant protection: If symptoms spread and treatment is needed, consult a licensed plant-protection supplier or an agronomist. Plant protection products are regulated; follow local rules.
  • General care: The dates begin to ripen (color change). High temperature and regular water are important during this period.
  • Pests & diseases: In hot and dry weather, look on the undersides of the leaves for fine webbing and speckled yellowing (spider mites). Washing the leaves during the cool hours reduces their numbers. Check the undersides of the leaves for clusters of whiteflies. A yellow sticky trap is the easiest way to monitor their numbers.

September
  • Watering: In a long drought, water deeply once a month.
  • Plant protection: Preventive measures and trap checks for the Red Palm Weevil (Rhynchophorus ferrugineus) should continue.
  • General care: Harvest season begins. Dates are picked according to ripeness stage (khalal, rutab, tamr).
  • Pests & diseases: Collapse of the top leaves can be a sign of Red Palm Weevil. Protect the fruits from birds and other pests.
October
  • Watering: Light watering can be given if the harvest is continuing; stop it if it is finished.
  • Fertilizing: After harvest (post-harvest), a balanced NPK fertilizer can be given to renew the soil.
  • Plant protection: Final period of Red Palm Weevil control.
  • General care: Main harvest period. After harvest, clearing of basal suckers (offsets) can be carried out.
November
  • General care: In winter rains, make sure water does not pool in the root zone; for this plant, drainage is more critical than irrigation.
December
  • General care: Evergreen leaves continue to lose water in winter. Water thoroughly once before the soil freezes.
  • Frost risk: In hard and prolonged frosts, cover the root zone with mulch or dry leaves; also protect young plants. It is damaged below about -8 °C.
