Green Bean Care
Phaseolus vulgaris
An easy-to-grow legume that fixes nitrogen from the air into the soil. Pole varieties need support; bush (dwarf) varieties grow without it.
Monthly care calendar
Timings are for a temperate Northern Hemisphere climate. In warmer areas tasks start earlier, in colder areas later; in the Southern Hemisphere shift them by six months.
- Watering: If there is no rain, water 1-2 times a week; the soil should not stay constantly wet.
- Fertilizing: Beans fix their own nitrogen; mixing in compost alone before sowing is enough, and nitrogen fertilizer only encourages leaf growth.
- Plant protection: If symptoms spread and treatment is needed, consult a licensed plant-protection supplier or an agronomist. Plant protection products are regulated; follow local rules.
- General care: Sow the seeds directly 3-4 cm deep once the soil has warmed to 15 °C; leave 40-50 cm between rows for bush beans and 70-80 cm for pole beans. For pole varieties, set up 2-2.5 m stakes at sowing time.
- Pests & diseases: Look for aphids (green or black clusters of small insects) on fresh shoot tips. If there are only a few, you can knock them off with a strong jet of water.
- Frost risk: Cover emerging seedlings on cold nights; beans die if touched by frost.
- Watering: Water deeply at the base 2-3 times a week, in the early morning; do not water again until the soil surface has dried 2-3 cm down.

- General care: Harvest: Pick the pods every 2-3 days while still tender enough to snap when broken, before the seeds inside become prominent.
- General care: Do not work among wet leaves and do not water in a way that wets the leaves; diseases spread with water.
- Pests & diseases: In hot and dry weather, look on the undersides of the leaves for fine webbing and speckled yellowing (spider mites). Washing the leaves during the cool hours reduces their numbers.
