Peperomia Care

Peperomia

A popular houseplant, usually compact, that shows great variety in leaf texture, shape and color. It likes spots with bright but indirect light and an airy, very well-drained potting soil. The biggest risk is root rot caused by overwatering, so the soil should be allowed to dry before watering.

Frost-tender (protect from frost) · 8 °C / 46 °F

Monthly care calendar

Timings are for a temperate Northern Hemisphere climate. In warmer areas tasks start earlier, in colder areas later; in the Southern Hemisphere shift them by six months.

January
  • Watering: Cut back greatly; water when the potting soil has dried out completely (about 0.2 L every 3-4 weeks), using water that has been left to stand.
  • Pruning: Cut only yellowing or drying leaves.
  • General care: Dormancy period. Keep away from radiators and cold drafts.
  • Pests & diseases: Overwatering that causes root rot is the biggest risk. Leaf drop is often caused by this.
  • Frost risk: If frost is expected, cover with frost fabric; if in a pot, move to a sheltered place. Damaged below approximately 8 °C.
February
  • Watering: Continue watering when the potting soil has dried out completely (about 0.2 L every 2-3 weeks).
  • General care: Wipe the leaves with a damp cloth to remove dust.
  • Pests & diseases: Check the undersides of the leaves and the stem junctions for mealybugs (Pseudococcidae).
  • Frost risk: If frost is expected, cover with frost fabric; if in a pot, move to a sheltered place. Damaged below approximately 8 °C.
March
  • Watering: Increase watering as growth begins. When the top half of the soil dries out, water (approximately 0.2-0.3 L every 2 weeks).
  • Fertilizing: Once a month, give a balanced NPK liquid fertilizer at a quarter of the label dose. Do not overfeed.
  • Pruning: Cut the tips of long shoots (pinching) to make the plant more vigorous.
  • General care: This is the best time for repotting (if the roots have filled the pot) and for propagation by leaf or stem cuttings.
  • Frost risk: If frost is expected, cover with frost fabric; if in a pot, move to a sheltered place. Damaged below approximately 8 °C.
April
  • Watering: When the top half of the soil is dry (about 0.3 L every 10-14 days).
  • Fertilizing: Once a month, at a quarter of the label dose.
  • Pruning: Pinching can be continued.
  • General care: Growth accelerates. Protect from direct sunlight.
  • Pests & diseases: Leaf drop or wilting can be a sign of overwatering.
May
  • Watering: As the top half of the soil dries out (about 0.3-0.4 L/week).
  • Fertilizing: Every 2-3 weeks, one quarter of the label rate.
  • Pruning: For aesthetic purposes only.
  • General care: Drainage is vital for this plant. In heavy, water-retaining soil, plant on a mound or bed raised 20-30 cm, and keep the root collar above the surrounding soil level.
  • Pests & diseases: Fungal spots (Cercospora) may be seen on the leaves; remove the diseased leaves.
June
  • Watering: In a long drought, water deeply once a month.
  • Fertilizing: Every 2-3 weeks, one quarter of the label rate.
  • General care: Some species produce interesting flowers that resemble mouse tails.
  • Pests & diseases: Check the undersides of the leaves for spider mites (Tetranychidae).
July
  • Watering: In midsummer, deep watering every 15-20 days is enough. Water so that the soil is wetted to a depth of 10-15 cm from the surface.
  • Fertilizing: Every 2-3 weeks, one quarter of the label rate.
  • General care: Keep it in a position sheltered from midday sun; scorching at the leaf edges is a sign of burn.
August
  • Watering: In midsummer, deep watering every 15-20 days is enough. Water so that the soil is wetted to a depth of 10-15 cm from the surface.
  • Fertilizing: Once a month, at a quarter of the label dose.
  • General care: Growth slows.
September
  • Watering: In a long drought, water deeply once a month.
  • Fertilizing: Once a month, with one of the final feedings using a very diluted (quarter-dose) fertilizer.
  • Pruning: For a fuller appearance, you can pinch out the tips of long shoots (pinching).
  • General care: Growth slows; prepare the plant for winter.
  • Pests & diseases: To reduce the risk of root rot, lengthen the intervals between waterings.
  • Frost risk: Keep the plant away from open windows and doors that may get cold at night.
October
  • Watering: Reduce watering (about 0.2 L every 2-3 weeks).
  • Fertilizing: From the end of the month, stop feeding.
  • General care: Preparing for dormancy. Move it away from windows where it may get cold at night.
  • Frost risk: Watch for cold drafts.
November
  • Watering: Cut back greatly; water when the potting soil has dried out completely (about 0.2 L every 3-4 weeks).
  • General care: In winter rains, make sure water does not pool in the root zone; for this plant, drainage is more critical than irrigation.
  • Pests & diseases: Against the risk of root rot, make sure the soil has dried out completely before watering.
  • Frost risk: If frost is expected, cover with frost fabric; if in a pot, move to a sheltered place. Damaged below approximately 8 °C.
December
  • Watering: Cut back greatly; water when the potting soil has dried out completely (about 0.2 L every 3-4 weeks).
  • Pruning: Remove only dry leaves.
  • General care: Full dormancy period.
  • Frost risk: If frost is expected, cover with frost fabric; if in a pot, move to a sheltered place. Damaged below approximately 8 °C.
