Nidularium Care

Nidularium

A bromeliad species whose center leaves take on bright colors before flowering, creating a 'nest'-like appearance. Compared with other bromeliads it tolerates less light (partial shade/shade). It holds water in its central leaf cup and needs an airy potting mix (such as orchid mix).

Frost-tender (protect from frost) · 10 °C / 50 °F

Monthly care calendar

Timings are for a temperate Northern Hemisphere climate. In warmer areas tasks start earlier, in colder areas later; in the Southern Hemisphere shift them by six months.

January
  • Watering: Fill the central leaf reservoir (rosette) with fresh, lime-free water (drinking water/rainwater) every 3-4 weeks (about 0.1 L). Very lightly moisten the potting mix once a month.
  • Pruning: Cut only completely dried-out leaves at the base.
  • General care: To increase humidity, place water-filled containers around it or use a humidity tray. Keep it away from radiators.
  • Pests & diseases: Check the leaf bases for mealybugs (Pseudococcidae).
  • Frost risk: If frost is expected, cover with frost fabric; if in a pot, move to a sheltered place. Damaged below approximately 10 °C.
February
  • Watering: Fill the central rosette with fresh, lime-free water every 3-4 weeks.
  • General care: Keep humidity high. Dust the leaves with a damp cloth.
  • Pests & diseases: Do not leave the water in the rosette stagnant; refresh it often.
  • Frost risk: If frost is expected, cover with frost fabric; if in a pot, move to a sheltered place. Damaged below approximately 10 °C.
March
  • Watering: Fill the rosette with fresh, lime-free water every 2-3 weeks.
  • Fertilizing: Once a month, apply a heavily diluted (quarter-strength) orchid/air plant fertilizer as a leaf spray or into the rosette. Do not overfeed.
  • General care: When offsets (pups) emerging beside the mother plant reach one-third of its size, you can separate and replant them.
  • Frost risk: If frost is expected, cover with frost fabric; if in a pot, move to a sheltered place. Damaged below approximately 10 °C.
April
  • Watering: If there is no rainfall, water every 15 days.
  • Fertilizing: Continue feeding once a month with a heavily diluted fertilizer.
  • General care: Growth accelerates. Protect strictly from direct sunlight.
  • Pests & diseases: Check the leaf bases for mealybugs.
May
  • Watering: If there is no rainfall, water once a week.
  • Fertilizing: Every 2-3 weeks, continue fertilizing at a very diluted rate.
  • Pruning: Remove only lower leaves that are drying out.
  • General care: Spread a 5-7 cm layer of mulch over the root zone; it retains soil moisture and suppresses weeds. Do not pile mulch against the trunk. Drainage is vital for this plant. In heavy soil that holds water, plant it on a raised mound or berm 20-30 cm high so that the root collar stays above the surrounding soil level.
  • Pests & diseases: Scale insects (Coccoidea) can be seen on the undersides of the leaves.
June
  • Watering: Water deeply twice a week; prefer infrequent and generous watering over small and frequent. Water so that the soil is wetted 10-15 cm down from the surface.
  • Fertilizing: Every 2-3 weeks, continue fertilizing at a very diluted rate.
  • General care: In hot weather and in air-conditioned environments, increase humidity by misting the leaves with water.
  • Pests & diseases: Make sure the water in the rosette does not become contaminated; empty and refill it regularly.
July
  • Watering: Water deeply twice a week; prefer infrequent and generous watering over small and frequent. Water so that the soil is wetted 10-15 cm down from the surface.
  • Fertilizing: Every 2-3 weeks, continue fertilizing at a very diluted rate.
  • General care: Keep it in a position sheltered from midday sun; scorching at the leaf edges is a sign of burn.
  • Pests & diseases: Leaf rot is a sign of overwatering or poor ventilation.
August
  • Watering: Water deeply twice a week; prefer infrequent and generous watering over small and frequent. Water so that the soil is wetted 10-15 cm down from the surface.
  • Fertilizing: Continue feeding once a month with a heavily diluted fertilizer.
  • General care: Growth begins to slow.
September
  • Watering: If there is no rainfall, water once a week.
  • Fertilizing: Once a month, spray a heavily diluted (quarter-strength) orchid fertilizer onto the leaves or into the rosette.
  • Pruning: Cut only completely dried-out leaves at the base.
  • General care: As the mother plant completes its life, the offsets (pups) emerging beside it continue to grow.
  • Pests & diseases: Prevent bacteria and mosquito larvae by refreshing the water in the rosette often.
  • Frost risk: Keep the plant away from open windows that may get cold at night.
October
  • Watering: If there is no rainfall, water every 15 days.
  • Fertilizing: From the end of the month, stop feeding.
  • General care: Preparing for dormancy. Move it away from windows where it may get cold at night.
  • Frost risk: Watch for cold drafts.
November
  • Watering: Fill the rosette with fresh, lime-free water every 3-4 weeks.
  • General care: In winter rains, make sure water does not pool in the root zone; for this plant, drainage is more critical than irrigation.
  • Pests & diseases: The risk of spider mites (Tetranychidae) increases.
  • Frost risk: If frost is expected, cover with frost fabric; if in a pot, move to a sheltered place. Damaged below approximately 10 °C.
December
  • Watering: Fill the rosette with fresh, lime-free water every 3-4 weeks.
  • Pruning: Remove only completely dried-out leaves.
  • General care: Full dormancy period. Focus on keeping humidity high.
  • Pests & diseases: Potting mix that stays wet causes root rot.
  • Frost risk: If frost is expected, cover with frost fabric; if in a pot, move to a sheltered place. Damaged below approximately 10 °C.
