Garden Care Guide

Japanese Larch Care

Larix kaempferi

A decorative conifer that sheds its needles in autumn. Because it is native to Japan's cool, humid mountains, Izmir's hot, dry climate is completely unsuitable for this tree to survive, and planting it is not recommended.

Hardy · -40 °C / -40 °F

Monthly care calendar

Timings are for a temperate Northern Hemisphere climate. In warmer areas tasks start earlier, in colder areas later; in the Southern Hemisphere shift them by six months.

January
  • General care: The plant is in dormancy.
  • Pests & diseases: Against the risk of root rot, make sure drainage is good.
  • Frost risk: Its mild winters cannot provide the chilling period the tree needs.
February
  • Pruning: It does not need formative pruning and its top should not be cut. Only remove dry, broken, and diseased branches.
  • General care: It may wake up irregularly or weakly because of insufficient winter cold.
March
  • Watering: Water deeply once a week (30 L per tree).
  • Fertilizing: Slow-release balanced fertilizer (15-15-15 NPK) can be applied.
  • General care: New, soft needles emerge.
  • Pests & diseases: A poorly growing plant is vulnerable to pests.
April
  • Watering: If there is no rainfall, water every 15 days.
  • General care: Try to keep the soil constantly moist.
May
  • Watering: If there is no rainfall, water once a week.
  • General care: Spread a 5-7 cm layer of mulch over the root zone; it retains soil moisture and suppresses weeds. Do not pile mulch against the trunk.
  • Pests & diseases: Leaf scorch and leaf drop may begin.
June
  • Watering: Water deeply twice a week; prefer infrequent and generous watering over small and frequent. The root zone should be wetted to a depth of 30-40 cm.
  • Plant protection: Spider mites may be seen on a tree weakened by hot and dry stress.
  • General care: The tree is struggling to survive.
  • Pests & diseases: The risk of plant death is high due to heat stress and drought.
July
  • Watering: Water deeply twice a week; prefer infrequent and generous watering over small and frequent. The root zone should be wetted to a depth of 30-40 cm.
  • General care: To stay healthy, it needs constant and plentiful water.
August
  • Watering: Water deeply twice a week; prefer infrequent and generous watering over small and frequent. The root zone should be wetted to a depth of 30-40 cm.
September
  • Watering: If there is no rainfall, water once a week.
October
  • Watering: If there is no rainfall, water every 15 days.
  • General care: If it has survived, its leaves will begin to yellow and drop.
November
  • Watering: Not required, natural rainfall is sufficient.
  • General care: Leaf fall is completed.
December
  • General care: Evergreen leaves continue to lose water in winter. Water thoroughly once before the soil freezes.
  • Pests & diseases: Check the trunk and branches.
