Ilex colchica Care
Ilex colchica
An evergreen butcher's broom species native to the Black Sea region. For fruit set, a male plant must be planted near the female plants (dioecious). In Izmir it needs partial shade and moist, acidic soils; it is sensitive to drought and heat.
Monthly care calendar
Timings are for a temperate Northern Hemisphere climate. In warmer areas tasks start earlier, in colder areas later; in the Southern Hemisphere shift them by six months.
- Watering: Not required, natural rainfall is sufficient.
- Pruning: Fruiting branches can be cut for decoration.
- Plant protection: Applying dormant oil (mineral oil) against scale insects can be considered.
- Pests & diseases: Check for scale insects on branches. No frost protection is needed.
- Pruning: Before new growth begins is the best time to prune to shape, control size or form a hedge.
- General care: Clear weeds.
- Watering: Water a newly planted specimen more often than established plants during its first year, as its root system is still shallow.
- Fertilizing: Apply a balanced fertilizer or well-rotted organic fertilizer once when it wakes from dormancy. Because yield and fruit quality depend on nutrient balance, having a soil analysis done is especially useful for this plant.
- Pruning: Prune just before the shoots break. Because flowers form on this year's new shoots, hard pruning increases flowering. For hedge forms, trimming is done at the beginning and end of the growing season. If grown as a tree form, light thinning is applied during the dormant period. On female plants, light pruning is preferred to increase fruit yield.
- Plant protection: Check the new shoots for aphids.
- General care: Good time for planting and transplanting.
- Watering: If there is no rainfall, water every 15 days. Water newly planted plants more often than established plants during the first year; the root system is still shallow.
- Plant protection: If symptoms spread and treatment is needed, consult a licensed plant-protection supplier or an agronomist. Plant protection products are regulated; follow local rules.
- General care: Suitable period for planting and transplanting. Flowering begins.
- Pests & diseases: Look for aphids (green or black clusters of small insects) on fresh shoot tips. If there are only a few, you can knock them off with a strong jet of water.
- Watering: If there is no rainfall, water once a week.
Flowering continues. Apply mulch 5-7 cm thick over the root zone; it conserves soil moisture and suppresses weeds. Do not press mulch against the stem.
- Pests & diseases: If you see black spots with yellow halos on the leaves (black spot), collect the diseased leaves and remove them from the garden; the disease overwinters in fallen leaves. Check the fresh shoot tips for aphids (small clusters of green or black insects). If there are few, you can knock them off with a strong spray of water.
- Watering: Water deeply twice a week; prefer infrequent and generous watering over small and frequent. The root zone should be wetted to a depth of 30-40 cm.

- General care: Keep it in a position sheltered from midday sun; scorching at the leaf edges is a sign of burn.
