Guzmania Care
Guzmania lingulata
A tropical bromeliad with colorful, showy flower bracts (leaves) that last for months. It likes bright but indirect light, high humidity and an airy potting mix; watering is done by filling the funnel (rosette) in the center of the leaves with water.
Monthly care calendar
Timings are for a temperate Northern Hemisphere climate. In warmer areas tasks start earlier, in colder areas later; in the Southern Hemisphere shift them by six months.
- Watering: Keep the central funnel 1/4 full and refresh it every 3-4 weeks. Keep the potting soil very lightly moist. In heated rooms, mist the leaves with water.
- Pruning: Cut only drying leaf tips or the drying flower bract.
- General care: To provide high humidity, group the plant with other plants or use a humidifier.
- Pests & diseases: Check the leaf bases for mealybugs or scale insects.
- Frost risk: If frost is expected, cover with frost fabric; if in a pot, move to a sheltered place. Damaged below approximately 10 °C.
- Watering: Refresh the water in the saucer once a month. Lightly moisten the pot soil when it is close to drying out.
- Pruning: Remove the parts that are drying out.
- General care: Continue to provide high humidity.
- Pests & diseases: Do pest control.
- Frost risk: If frost is expected, cover with frost fabric; if in a pot, move to a sheltered place. Damaged below approximately 10 °C.
- Watering: Keep the funnel 1/2 full and refresh it every 2-3 weeks. Keep the potting soil slightly moist.
- Fertilizing: At the end of the month, you can apply orchid fertilizer to the soil diluted to one quarter strength; do not overfeed.
- General care: A suitable time for repotting (if the pot is too small).
- Pests & diseases: Check for pests as new growth emerges.
- Frost risk: If frost is expected, cover with frost fabric; if in a pot, move to a sheltered place. Damaged below approximately 10 °C.
- Watering: If there is no rainfall, water every 15 days.
- Fertilizing: Apply a diluted (1/4 dose) liquid fertilizer once a month to the soil or as a foliar spray. Do not fertilize the saucer.
- Watering: If there is no rainfall, water once a week.
- Fertilizing: Continue diluted fertilizing once a month.
- General care: Spread a 5-7 cm layer of mulch over the root zone; it retains soil moisture and suppresses weeds. Do not pile mulch against the trunk. Drainage is vital for this plant. In heavy soil that holds water, plant it on a raised mound or berm 20-30 cm high so that the root collar stays above the surrounding soil level.
- Pests & diseases: Against the risk of root rot, take care that the soil does not become soggy.
- Watering: Water deeply twice a week; prefer infrequent and generous watering over small and frequent. Water so that the soil is wetted 10-15 cm down from the surface.
- Fertilizing: Fertilize with a diluted fertilizer once a month.
- General care: If the offsets have reached 1/3 of the size of the mother plant, you can separate them and plant them in their own pots.
- Watering: Water deeply twice a week; prefer infrequent and generous watering over small and frequent. Water so that the soil is wetted 10-15 cm down from the surface.
- Fertilizing: Fertilize with a diluted fertilizer once a month.
- General care: Keep it in a position sheltered from midday sun; scorching at the leaf edges is a sign of burn.
- Pests & diseases: Browning at the leaf tips is a sign of low humidity or limy water.
- Watering: Water deeply twice a week; prefer infrequent and generous watering over small and frequent. Water so that the soil is wetted 10-15 cm down from the surface.
- Fertilizing: Fertilize with a diluted fertilizer once a month.
- General care: Protect from direct sunlight, as it can cause leaf scorch.
- Watering: If there is no rainfall, water once a week.
- Fertilizing: At the end of the month, apply the last fertilizer.
- General care: It is still a suitable time to separate the offsets.
- Pests & diseases: Do a general pest check going into winter.
- Watering: If there is no rainfall, water every 15 days.
- Pruning: Cut the drying flower stalk at the base once it has turned completely brown.
- General care: You can move the plant to a brighter place for the winter, but keep it out of direct sun.
- Watering: Refresh the water in the funnel every 3 weeks. Moisten the soil very lightly.
- Pruning: Remove only leaves that are drying out.
- General care: In winter rains, make sure water does not pool in the root zone; for this plant, drainage is more critical than irrigation.
- Frost risk: If frost is expected, cover with frost fabric; if in a pot, move to a sheltered place. Damaged below approximately 10 °C.
- Watering: Refresh the water in the funnel once a month.
- General care: Evergreen leaves continue to lose water in winter. Water thoroughly once before the soil freezes.
- Frost risk: If frost is expected, cover with frost fabric; if in a pot, move to a sheltered place. Damaged below approximately 10 °C.
