Sheep's Fescue Care
Festuca ovina
A fine-textured, clump-forming, low-maintenance cool-season grass. It is drought tolerant but goes dormant (turns yellow) in Manisa's summer heat; it performs best in autumn and spring.
Monthly care calendar
Timings are for a temperate Northern Hemisphere climate. In warmer areas tasks start earlier, in colder areas later; in the Southern Hemisphere shift them by six months.
- Fertilizing: Not needed. Mowing: not needed.
- General care: The lawn is green but resting.
- Fertilizing: Not needed. Mowing: if necessary, one mowing at a high setting can be done at the end of the month.
- General care: It begins to wake; remove weeds by hand.
- Watering: If the rains are insufficient, start watering.
- Fertilizing: Once growth begins, apply a slow-release, balanced NPK lawn fertilizer (check the package for rates; do not overapply). Pruning (mowing): Begin mowing weekly at 6-8 cm height.
- General care: Main spring growth period.
- Pests & diseases: Monitor for leaf spot diseases.
- Watering: Water deeply once a week (about 25 L/m²).
- Fertilizing: Continue fertilizing. Mowing: continue mowing once a week.
- Plant protection: Use selective herbicides containing 2,4-D for broadleaf weeds.
- General care: This is its healthiest and most lush period.
- Watering: Water deeply 1-2 times a week (25-30 L/m² in total).
- Fertilizing: At the start of the month, make the last spring fertilizer application. Mowing (height): Continue mowing and raise the cutting height to 8-10 cm as temperatures approach summer levels.
- General care: Mowing high keeps the roots cool and prepares the lawn for summer stress.
- Pests & diseases: The first signs of heat stress can begin.
- Watering: Water deeply at least twice a week (30 L/m² in total).
- Fertilizing: Not needed. Mowing: growth slows; mow at a high setting only when needed.
- General care: Heat stress begins; the lawn may turn yellow and go dormant, which is normal. A lot of water is needed to keep it green.
- Pests & diseases: The risk of fungal diseases increases.
- Watering: If you want it to stay green, water deeply 2-3 times a week (total 35 L/m²); if it is to be left dormant, do not water.
- Fertilizing: Never given. Mowing: not needed.
- Plant protection: Keep monitoring for fungal diseases.
- General care: This is the most challenging month; allowing the lawn to go dormant is the healthiest approach.
- Pests & diseases: Heat stress and fungal diseases can be fatal.
- Watering: Same as in July.
- Fertilizing: Not needed. Mowing: not needed.
- General care: The struggle for survival continues.
- Watering: Start or increase watering as the weather cools.
- Fertilizing: At the end of the month, apply a slow-release fertilizer. Pruning (shaping): begin trimming once new growth starts.
- General care: It is the ideal time for soil aeration and overseeding.
- Pests & diseases: Repair the areas that dried out in summer.
- Watering: Stop if the rains begin.
- Fertilizing: Continue fertilizing. Mowing: continue mowing once a week.
- General care: This is the most active growth period; the last chance for a late sowing.
- Fertilizing: At the start of the month, apply a final potassium-rich fertilizer to prepare for winter. Mowing (height): Growth is slowing; mow every 2-3 weeks.
- General care: Make the last mowing before winter a little higher; clear the leaves lying on top.
- Fertilizing: Not needed. Mowing: not needed.
- General care: The plant stays green but is dormant.
