Russian Vine Care
Fallopia baldschuanica (syn. Polygonum baldschuanicum)
A deciduous climber formerly known as Polygonum, incredibly fast-growing and able to cover large areas in a single season. It is known for its clouds of foamy white flowers that open in late summer and autumn. It is hardy, but because it can be aggressive, it needs hard pruning to keep it under control.
Monthly care calendar
Timings are for a temperate Northern Hemisphere climate. In warmer areas tasks start earlier, in colder areas later; in the Southern Hemisphere shift them by six months.
- Pruning: The most important period for keeping it under control. Prune the plant very hard, almost completely, leaving 30-60 cm above the ground. This prevents the plant from spreading excessively.
- Plant protection: Not needed; it is very hardy.
- General care: Full dormancy period.
- Pruning: Finish hard pruning by the end of the month.
- General care: Pruning debris is cleared away.
- Watering: Water only newly planted seedlings (10-15 L/week if there is no rain).
- Fertilizing: It must absolutely not be given; it encourages excessive growth.
- Pruning: Prune just before the shoots break. Because flowers form on this year's new shoots, hard pruning increases flowering.
- General care: The buds burst and new shoots begin to rise quickly from the base.
- Pests & diseases: Aphids (Aphidoidea) may be present on young shoots.
- Frost risk: Young shoots may be affected by severe late frosts.
- Watering: If there is no rainfall, water every 15 days.
- Pruning: Cut unwanted shoots to control and direct growth.
- General care: It grows at an incredible speed and can lengthen by 15-20 cm a day. Guide the shoots onto their support.
- Watering: If there is no rainfall, water once a week.
- Pruning: Continue pruning for control.
- General care: Spread a 5-7 cm layer of mulch over the root zone; it retains soil moisture and suppresses weeds. Do not pile mulch against the trunk.
- Watering: Water deeply twice a week; prefer infrequent and generous watering over small and frequent. The area around the roots should be wetted to a depth of 20-30 cm.
- Pruning: Summer pruning is important to prevent it from smothering windows, roofs and other plants.
- General care: Growth continues.
