Torch Cactus Care

Echinopsis spachiana (syn. Trichocereus spachianus)

A columnar cactus that offsets abundantly from the base and over time forms large groups. It needs plenty of sun and a very well-drained soil mix. Keeping it completely dry in winter is vital to prevent root rot.

Frost-tender (protect from frost) · 0 °C / 32 °F

Monthly care calendar

Timings are for a temperate Northern Hemisphere climate. In warmer areas tasks start earlier, in colder areas later; in the Southern Hemisphere shift them by six months.

January
  • Watering: Stop watering. In winter, wet soil is the most common cause of root rot.
  • General care: Keeping the plant dry throughout winter is the most important cultural practice.
  • Pests & diseases: Check the bases of the stems and the spaces between them for mealybugs (white cottony masses).
  • Frost risk: If frost is expected, cover with frost fabric; if in a pot, move to a sheltered place. Damaged below approximately 0 °C.
February
  • Watering: Stop watering. In winter, wet soil is the most common cause of root rot.
  • General care: Keep it dry.
  • Pests & diseases: Check the trunk for softness or discoloration, which may be a sign of rot.
  • Frost risk: If frost is expected, cover with frost fabric; if in a pot, move to a sheltered place. Damaged below approximately 0 °C.
March
  • Watering: Stop watering. In winter, wet soil is the most common cause of root rot.
  • General care: The plant begins to wake up. Start watering gradually to avoid a shock effect.
  • Pests & diseases: It may be more sensitive to pests while waking from dormancy; check it.
  • Frost risk: If frost is expected, cover with frost fabric; if in a pot, move to a sheltered place. Damaged below approximately 0 °C.
April
  • Watering: Once a month, water when the soil is completely dry.
  • Fertilizing: At the end of the month, a single application of half-strength, low-nitrogen, high-potassium cactus fertilizer may be given. Do not overfeed.
  • Plant protection: Be watchful for mealybugs and scale insects.
  • General care: It is the best time for repotting. Use a pot one size larger and very well-draining cactus soil.
May
  • Watering: Once a month, water when the soil is completely dry.
  • Plant protection: Check for pests.
  • General care: Drainage is vital for this plant. In heavy, water-retaining soil, plant on a mound or bed raised 20-30 cm, and keep the root collar above the surrounding soil level.
June
  • Watering: After the soil has dried out completely, water a little at a time every 15-20 days.
  • General care: Propagation can be done by separating the offsets. Leave the cut surface to dry for a few days, then plant.
  • Pests & diseases: Sunscald may occur during extreme heat, especially on newly planted or relocated plants.
July
  • Watering: After the soil has dried out completely, water a little at a time every 15-20 days.
  • General care: Growth continues.
August
  • Watering: After the soil has dried out completely, water a little at a time every 15-20 days.

September
  • Watering: Once a month, water when the soil is completely dry.
  • Plant protection: Do a final check for mealybugs and scale insects.

  • Pests & diseases: Make sure the plant enters a dry period before the autumn rains begin.
October
  • Watering: Once a month, water when the soil is completely dry.
  • General care: Move potted plants to a sheltered place where they will not get rain (such as under the eaves).
  • Pests & diseases: Make preparations to reduce the risk of rot.
  • Frost risk: Nights begin to cool; it is important that the plant stays dry.
November
  • Watering: Stop watering. In winter, wet soil is the most common cause of root rot.
  • General care: In winter rains, make sure water does not pool in the root zone; for this plant, drainage is more critical than irrigation.
  • Frost risk: If frost is expected, cover with frost fabric; if in a pot, move to a sheltered place. Damaged below approximately 0 °C.
December
  • Watering: Stop watering. In winter, wet soil is the most common cause of root rot.
  • General care: Evergreen leaves continue to lose water in winter. Water thoroughly once before the soil freezes.
  • Pests & diseases: This is the riskiest period for root rot; keep it dry.
  • Frost risk: If frost is expected, cover with frost fabric; if in a pot, move to a sheltered place. Damaged below approximately 0 °C.
