Zucchini Care
Cucurbita pepo
A fast-growing summer vegetable that gives a generous crop from few plants. It takes up a lot of space; the flowers are edible too.
Monthly care calendar
Timings are for a temperate Northern Hemisphere climate. In warmer areas tasks start earlier, in colder areas later; in the Southern Hemisphere shift them by six months.
- Watering: If there is no rain, water twice a week at the base once the top 2-3 cm of soil has dried.
- Fertilizing: Mix plenty of compost or well-rotted manure into the sowing site.
- Plant protection: If symptoms spread and treatment is needed, consult a licensed plant-protection supplier or an agronomist. Plant protection products are regulated; follow local rules.
- General care: Once the soil has warmed, sow the seeds 2-3 cm deep, 2 seeds per planting station; leave at least 100 cm between stations. When they emerge, keep the stronger seedling and cut off the other.
- Pests & diseases: Look for aphids (green or black clusters of small insects) on fresh shoot tips. If there are only a few, you can knock them off with a strong jet of water.
- Frost risk: Cover young plants on cold nights.
- Watering: Water deeply at the base of the plant 3-4 times a week, in the early morning; do not wet the leaves. The soil should be moist down to a depth of 15-20 cm.
- Fertilizing: During the fruiting period, apply a balanced fertilizer every 3 weeks.
- Plant protection: If symptoms spread and treatment is needed, consult a licensed plant-protection supplier or an agronomist. Plant protection products are regulated; follow local rules.
- General care: Harvest: Cut the zucchini every 2-3 days when they are 15-20 cm long; fruit left to grow lowers yield.
- General care: If the first fruits rot from the tip and drop, the cause is usually lack of pollination or irregular watering; this is normal in the first weeks and improves within a few weeks.
- Pests & diseases: Look for white, powdery spots on the leaves (powdery mildew). Thinning dense branches to increase airflow slows its spread.
