Garden Care Guide

Croton Care

Codiaeum variegatum

A tropical plant grown for its striking colored leaves, but its care demands sensitivity. To keep its vivid colors it needs a spot with plenty of light, high humidity and a steady temperature, and it hates cold drafts; sudden changes of location can cause leaf drop.

Frost-tender (protect from frost) · 10 °C / 50 °F

Monthly care calendar

Timings are for a temperate Northern Hemisphere climate. In warmer areas tasks start earlier, in colder areas later; in the Southern Hemisphere shift them by six months.

January
  • Watering: Reduce the frequency; water when the top 3-4 cm of soil has dried (every 15-20 days).
  • Plant protection: In the dry indoor environment created by heating, check the undersides of the leaves for the risk of spider mites.
  • General care: Maintaining high humidity is critical. Set the pot on a pebble tray or place a humidifier nearby. Keep it strictly away from cold drafts and heat sources.
  • Pests & diseases: Leaf drop is usually caused by cold drafts or sudden temperature changes. Spider mites are the biggest pest.
  • Frost risk: If frost is expected, cover with frost fabric; if in a pot, move to a sheltered place. Damaged below approximately 10 °C.
February
  • Watering: Continue watering when the soil is half dry (every 15 days).
  • Plant protection: Continue checking for spider mites.
  • General care: Growth may begin to slow gradually. Avoid moving the plant if at all possible.
  • Frost risk: If frost is expected, cover with frost fabric; if in a pot, move to a sheltered place. Damaged below approximately 10 °C.
March
  • Watering: Increase watering as the weather warms and keep the soil constantly slightly moist (once a week).
  • Fertilizing: Apply a balanced fertilizer or well-rotted organic fertilizer once when it wakes from dormancy.
  • Pruning: This is the best time to prune to shape the plant or make it fuller. Wear gloves, as the milky sap is toxic.
  • Plant protection: Check the newly emerging leaves for pests.
  • General care: It is a suitable time for repotting (if the roots are very crowded) and for propagation by cuttings.
  • Pests & diseases: Check for mealybugs (cottony white patches) and spider mites.
  • Frost risk: If frost is expected, cover with frost fabric; if in a pot, move to a sheltered place. Damaged below approximately 10 °C.
April
  • Watering: If there is no rainfall, water every 15 days.
  • Fertilizing: Continue fertilizing once a month.
  • Pruning: Regularly remove yellowing leaves.
  • Plant protection: Be careful of spider mites and mealybugs.
  • General care: Turn the pot regularly so it receives light evenly.
  • Pests & diseases: If there is drying at the leaf tips, increase humidity.
May
  • Watering: If there is no rainfall, water once a week.
  • Fertilizing: Continue fertilizing once a month.
  • Pruning: Remove yellowing leaves.
  • Plant protection: The riskiest period for spider mites. Use neem oil or a suitable miticide if necessary.
  • General care: Spread a 5-7 cm layer of mulch over the root zone; it retains soil moisture and suppresses weeds. Do not pile mulch against the trunk.
  • Pests & diseases: Faded leaf colors are a sign of insufficient light, while leaf scorch is a sign of direct sunlight.
June
  • Watering: Water deeply twice a week; prefer infrequent and generous watering over small and frequent. Water so that the soil is wetted 10-15 cm down from the surface.
  • Fertilizing: Continue fertilizing once a month.
  • Plant protection: Check the undersides of the leaves and the branch junctions for spider mites, mealybugs and scale insects.
  • General care: Protect it from the direct airflow of an air conditioner or fan, because it both dries the air and causes sudden temperature changes.
  • Pests & diseases: Do not leave water in the pot saucer to prevent root rot.
July
  • Watering: Water deeply twice a week; prefer infrequent and generous watering over small and frequent. Water so that the soil is wetted 10-15 cm down from the surface.
  • Fertilizing: Continue fertilizing once a month.
  • Plant protection: Continue pest control.
  • General care: Keep it in a position sheltered from midday sun; scorching at the leaf edges is a sign of burn.
August
  • Watering: Water deeply twice a week; prefer infrequent and generous watering over small and frequent. Water so that the soil is wetted 10-15 cm down from the surface.
  • Fertilizing: At the start of the month, make the last fertilizer application.
  • General care: Growth slows; prepare the plant for its dormant period.
September
  • Watering: If there is no rainfall, water once a week.
  • Fertilizing: Stop fertilizing completely this month.
  • Plant protection: Keep checking for spider mites.
  • General care: If it spent the summer outdoors, this is the best time to bring it indoors, after checking for pests and before the nights cool down (drop below 15°C).
  • Pests & diseases: Before bringing it indoors, carefully check every part for mealybugs, scale insects, and spider mites.
  • Frost risk: None, but bring it indoors.
October
  • Watering: If there is no rainfall, water every 15 days.
  • Pruning: Remove yellowing leaves.
  • General care: Place the plant in its winter position and try not to move it again. Wipe the dust off the leaves.
  • Pests & diseases: Leaf drop after relocation is a normal reaction.
November
  • Watering: Reduce watering; water when the top 3-4 cm of soil has dried.
  • Plant protection: Check for the risk of spider mites in dry indoor conditions.
  • General care: The plant is in dormancy. Try to keep humidity high.
  • Pests & diseases: Check for spider mites.
  • Frost risk: If frost is expected, cover with frost fabric; if in a pot, move to a sheltered place. Damaged below approximately 10 °C.
December
  • Watering: Every 15-20 days, or water when the top of the soil is dry.
  • Plant protection: Check for spider mites.
  • General care: Evergreen leaves continue to lose water in winter. Water thoroughly once before the soil freezes.
  • Pests & diseases: In dry, warm indoor spaces, spider mites can be a problem in winter as well.
  • Frost risk: If frost is expected, cover with frost fabric; if in a pot, move to a sheltered place. Damaged below approximately 10 °C.
