Cockscomb Care
Celosia sp.
An annual that loves summer heat and sun and is known for its velvety, brightly colored flowers. For abundant flowering it needs regular watering in fertile, well-drained soil; because it is susceptible to root rot, excess water should be avoided.
Monthly care calendar
Timings are for a temperate Northern Hemisphere climate. In warmer areas tasks start earlier, in colder areas later; in the Southern Hemisphere shift them by six months.
- Watering: None (the plant is an annual and has completed its life).
- General care: Remove plant debris left from the previous season and aerate the soil.
- Frost risk: If frost is expected, cover with frost fabric; if in a pot, move to a sheltered place. Damaged below approximately 2 °C.
- General care: Enrich the soil by adding compost. You can start sowing seeds indoors at the end of the month.
- Frost risk: If frost is expected, cover with frost fabric; if in a pot, move to a sheltered place. Damaged below approximately 2 °C.
- General care: Continue sowing seeds indoors or in a greenhouse. Wait for the soil to warm up.
- Pests & diseases: During the seedling stage, do not overwater seedlings, to guard against damping-off disease.
- Frost risk: If frost is expected, cover with frost fabric; if in a pot, move to a sheltered place. Damaged below approximately 2 °C.
- Watering: If there is no rainfall, water every 15 days.
- Fertilizing: Give liquid fertilizer once a month.
- Plant protection: Check young seedlings for aphids.
- General care: Once the risk of last frost has passed and the soil has warmed (usually at the end of the month), plant seedlings outdoors.
- Pests & diseases: Snails and slugs can damage young seedlings.
- Frost risk: Protect the seedlings from late frosts.
- Watering: If there is no rainfall, water once a week.
- Fertilizing: Give liquid fertilizer once a month.
- Pruning: Regularly remove spent flowers at the base; this encourages new flowering.
- Plant protection: Check for aphids and spider mites.
- General care: Spread a 5-7 cm layer of mulch over the root zone; it retains soil moisture and suppresses weeds. Do not pile mulch against the trunk.
- Pests & diseases: Make sure there is good drainage against the risk of root rot.
- Watering: Water deeply twice a week; prefer infrequent and generous watering over small and frequent. Water so that the soil is wetted 10-15 cm down from the surface.
- Fertilizing: Give liquid fertilizer once a month.
