European Hornbeam Care
Carpinus betulus
A deciduous tree of cool, humid climates; it is used in landscapes especially because it is very suitable for shaping by pruning (hedges, walls, etc.). To stay healthy in Izmir's hot, dry summers it should be protected from afternoon sun and watered deeply on a regular basis.
Monthly care calendar
Timings are for a temperate Northern Hemisphere climate. In warmer areas tasks start earlier, in colder areas later; in the Southern Hemisphere shift them by six months.
- Watering: Winter rainfall is sufficient for mature trees. Water young trees deeply once a month during dry periods (30-40 L/tree).
- Pruning: Not needed. The best time for the main pruning is the end of the month or early March.
- Plant protection: You can control overwintering pest eggs (scale insects, aphids) by applying dormant oil to the trunk and branches.
- General care: Clear fallen leaves.
- Pests & diseases: Check the trunk and branches for signs of canker (sunken, oozing areas).
- Watering: If there is no rainfall, water young trees once a month.
- Pruning: While dormant, remove dry, broken, crossing and inward-growing branches so that air and light reach the inside of the crown. Do thinning pruning during dormancy. For hedge forms, a light trim is applied at the end of summer. A single leader is encouraged in young trees.
- Plant protection: Applying Bordeaux mixture after pruning can help prevent fungal diseases.
- General care: Clear away pruning debris.
- Pests & diseases: Carry out a general condition check.
- Watering: Water a newly planted specimen more often than established plants during its first year, as its root system is still shallow.
- Fertilizing: Apply a balanced fertilizer or well-rotted organic fertilizer once when it wakes from dormancy.
- Pruning: Pruning should be finished by the beginning of this month.
- Plant protection: Check the newly emerging leaves for aphids.
- General care: Good time for planting and transplanting.
- Pests & diseases: Be watchful for aphids and powdery mildew (white powder on the leaves).
- Watering: If there is no rainfall, water every 15 days. Water newly planted plants more often than established plants during the first year; the root system is still shallow.
- Plant protection: If symptoms spread and treatment is needed, consult a licensed plant-protection supplier or an agronomist. Plant protection products are regulated; follow local rules.
- General care: Suitable period for planting and transplanting. Flowering begins.
- Pests & diseases: Look for aphids (green or black clusters of small insects) on fresh shoot tips. If there are only a few, you can knock them off with a strong jet of water.
- Watering: If there is no rainfall, water once a week.
Flowering continues. Apply mulch 5-7 cm thick over the root zone; it conserves soil moisture and suppresses weeds. Do not press mulch against the stem.
- Pests & diseases: If you see black spots with yellow halos on the leaves (black spot), collect the diseased leaves and remove them from the garden; the disease overwinters in fallen leaves. Check the fresh shoot tips for aphids (small clusters of green or black insects). If there are few, you can knock them off with a strong spray of water.
- Watering: Water deeply twice a week; prefer infrequent and generous watering over small and frequent. The root zone should be wetted to a depth of 30-40 cm.
- Pruning: If pruned as a hedge, a light shearing can be done this month to maintain the shape.
- Plant protection: If symptoms spread and treatment is needed, consult a licensed plant-protection supplier or an agronomist. Plant protection products are regulated; follow local rules.
- General care: Regular watering is critical to prevent leaf scorch and summer stress.

- Pruning: Do not prune.
- Plant protection: Continue checking for spider mites.
- General care: Keep it in a position sheltered from midday sun; scorching at the leaf edges is a sign of burn.
- Pests & diseases: Watch for signs of water stress (drying at leaf edges, wilting).
- Watering: Water deeply twice a week; prefer infrequent and generous watering over small and frequent. The root zone should be wetted to a depth of 30-40 cm.
- Plant protection: Continue checking for spider mites.
- General care: Continue regular watering so the tree enters winter strong.
- Watering: If there is no rainfall, water once a week.
- Fertilizing: None; let the plant prepare for winter.
- Pruning: Do not prune.
- Plant protection: If symptoms spread and treatment is needed, consult a licensed plant-protection supplier or an agronomist. Plant protection products are regulated; follow local rules.
- General care: A perfect time to plant new hornbeam seedlings. Warm soil and approaching rains support rooting.
- Pests & diseases: If you see black spots with yellow halos on the leaves (black spot), collect the diseased leaves and remove them from the garden; the disease overwinters in fallen leaves.

- Watering: Water a newly planted specimen more often than established plants during its first year, as its root system is still shallow.
- General care: Good time for planting and transplanting. Collect fallen leaves; many disease agents and pests overwinter under them.
- Pests & diseases: Collecting fallen leaves prevents fungal diseases from carrying over to the next year.
- Watering: Not needed. If a dry spell occurs, water young trees once a month.
- General care: The tree is in full dormancy.
