Carduus olympicus Care

Carduus olympicus

A mountain plant endemic to Turkey and found only on Uludağ; it needs cold winters and cool summers. It cannot adapt to Izmir's hot, long summers and mild winters, so growing it in the garden is almost impossible and not recommended.

Hardy · -25 °C / -13 °F

Monthly care calendar

Timings are for a temperate Northern Hemisphere climate. In warmer areas tasks start earlier, in colder areas later; in the Southern Hemisphere shift them by six months.

January
  • Watering: Not required; winter precipitation is sufficient.
  • General care: Instead of the deep winter cold it needs, mild and wet weather can cause root rot. Drainage must be excellent.
  • Pests & diseases: Root and crown rot are the biggest risks.
  • Frost risk: The plant is frost-hardy; the real problem is the lack of frost.
February
  • General care: If the plant cannot complete its winter chilling period, it may fail to wake up or may grow very weakly.
  • Pests & diseases: Check for root rot.
March
  • Watering: If there is no rainfall, water very sparingly.
  • Fertilizing: Absolutely not needed.
  • Plant protection: Stressed new shoots can attract aphids.
  • General care: As the weather warms, the plant begins to become stressed.
  • Pests & diseases: It will be very sensitive to aphids and fungal diseases.
April
  • Watering: Try to keep the soil dry.
  • Plant protection: The risk of aphids and powdery mildew increases.
  • General care: From this month onward, the plant begins to weaken due to heat stress.
May
  • Pruning: Regularly remove spent flowers at the base; this encourages new flowering.
  • General care: The plant's growth stops and it begins to decline.
  • Pests & diseases: The plant is expected to die.
June
  • Watering: In a long drought, water deeply once a month.
  • Pruning: Regularly remove spent flowers at the base; this encourages new flowering.
  • General care: The plant is not expected to tolerate summer heat in this climate.
  • Pests & diseases: Heat stress and root rot kill the plant.
July
  • Watering: In midsummer, deep watering every 15-20 days is enough. Established plants (over 2 years old) do not need watering in most years. Water so that the soil is wetted to a depth of 10-15 cm from the surface.
  • Pruning: Regularly remove spent flowers at the base; this encourages new flowering.
  • General care: The plant will be dead.
