Peach-Leaved Bellflower Care

Campanula persicifolia

A perennial that likes cool, humid conditions and produces graceful towers of flowers. It becomes stressed in Izmir's hot summers, so it should be protected from afternoon sun and its soil kept constantly moist.

Monthly care calendar

Timings are for a temperate Northern Hemisphere climate. In warmer areas tasks start earlier, in colder areas later; in the Southern Hemisphere shift them by six months.

January
  • Watering: Winter precipitation is sufficient. The plant is resting as a leaf rosette at ground level.
  • Pruning: Remove leftover dry leaves and stems from the previous season.
  • Plant protection: Snails and slugs can be active in mild winters.
  • General care: The most suitable period for propagation and rejuvenation by dividing the roots every 3-4 years.
  • Pests & diseases: Check for snails and slugs (leaves with holes).
February
  • Watering: If there is no rainfall, water once a month.
  • Pruning: Continue removing dry leaves.
  • Plant protection: Keep checking for snails and slugs.
  • General care: Still a suitable time for root division (propagation).
March
  • Watering: Keep the soil moist; if there is no rain, water every 15 days (15 L/m²).
  • Fertilizing: At the start of the month, apply a slow-release balanced NPK (e.g., 10-10-10) fertilizer or compost (do not overapply).
  • Plant protection: **Controlling slugs and snails is critical**, as they feed on new shoots. If necessary, use metaldehyde-based granules or organic iron phosphate granules.
  • General care: Mulch to keep the roots cool in the summer heat.
  • Pests & diseases: Be very watchful for aphids and especially slugs.
April
  • Watering: If there is no rainfall, water every 15 days.
  • Pruning: Not needed. The flower stalks elongate.
  • Plant protection: Continue controlling snails and aphids.
  • General care: Support tall flower stalks with a thin stake so they do not fall over (staking).
  • Pests & diseases: Monitor for signs of rust or powdery mildew on the leaves.
May
  • Watering: If there is no rainfall, water once a week.
  • Fertilizing: If needed, a potassium-rich liquid fertilizer may be applied once to support flowering.
  • Pruning: Regularly remove spent flowers at the base; this encourages new flowering.
  • Plant protection: Continue pest control.
  • General care: Spread a 5-7 cm layer of mulch over the root zone; it retains soil moisture and suppresses weeds. Do not pile mulch against the trunk.
  • Pests & diseases: Usually trouble-free; the main pest is the snail.
June
  • Watering: Water deeply twice a week; prefer infrequent and generous watering over small and frequent. Water so that the soil is wetted 10-15 cm down from the surface.
  • Pruning: Regularly remove spent flowers at the base; this encourages new flowering.
  • General care: As temperatures rise, the plant begins to weaken.
  • Pests & diseases: In hot and humid weather, powdery mildew or rust may appear.
July
  • Watering: Water deeply twice a week; prefer infrequent and generous watering over small and frequent. Water so that the soil is wetted 10-15 cm down from the surface.
  • Pruning: Regularly remove spent flowers at the base; this encourages new flowering.
  • General care: Keep it in a position sheltered from midday sun; scorching at the leaf edges is a sign of burn.
August
  • Watering: Water deeply twice a week; prefer infrequent and generous watering over small and frequent. Water so that the soil is wetted 10-15 cm down from the surface.
  • Pruning: Regularly remove spent flowers at the base; this encourages new flowering.
  • General care: Mark the plant's location so you do not forget where it is.
September
  • Watering: If there is no rainfall, water once a week.
  • Fertilizing: To support revival, you can apply a half-strength balanced liquid fertilizer once.
  • Pruning: Regularly remove spent flowers at the base; this encourages new flowering.
  • Plant protection: Snails and slugs become active again with the autumn rains; check for them.
  • General care: The best time of year to plant new bellflower seedlings or to propagate by dividing the existing roots.
  • Pests & diseases: Protect the newly emerging fresh leaves from snails.
October
  • Watering: If there is no rainfall, water every 15 days.
  • Pruning: Remove only yellowing leaves.
  • Plant protection: Continue snail control.
  • General care: The plant forms its leaf rosette for winter.
  • Pests & diseases: In humid weather, snails and slugs are the biggest problem.
November
  • Watering: Not needed; rainfall is sufficient.
  • Pruning: Remove yellowing leaves.
  • Plant protection: Continue snail control.
  • General care: It enters winter dormancy.

  • Pruning: Clear the remaining dry leaves.
  • Plant protection: Check for snails.
  • General care: Dormancy period.
