Ornamental Asparagus Care
Asparagus spp. (ornamental)
Likes bright places without direct sun (indirect light) and a humid environment. A popular houseplant known for its air-purifying properties, used in pots and hanging baskets.
Monthly care calendar
Timings are for a temperate Northern Hemisphere climate. In warmer areas tasks start earlier, in colder areas later; in the Southern Hemisphere shift them by six months.
- Watering: As the soil surface dries (about every 7-10 days), give a little water.
- Pruning: Cut only yellowing or drying branches at the base.
- Plant protection: Check the undersides of the leaves for spider mites (radiators dry the air).
- General care: To increase humidity, mist the leaves with water or place a bowl of water nearby.
- Pests & diseases: If you see signs of spider mites (fine webs), wipe the leaves with a damp cloth.
- Frost risk: If frost is expected, cover with frost fabric; if in a pot, move to a sheltered place. Damaged below approximately -2 °C.
- Watering: As the soil surface dries (every 7-10 days), continue watering.
- Pruning: Remove only dry branches.
- Plant protection: Continue to check for pests.
- General care: Toward the end of the month, you can prepare for repotting or pruning.
- Pests & diseases: Check for mealybugs (small cottony masses).
- Frost risk: If frost is expected, cover with frost fabric; if in a pot, move to a sheltered place. Damaged below approximately -2 °C.
- Watering: Water a newly planted specimen more often than established plants during its first year, as its root system is still shallow.
- Fertilizing: Apply a balanced fertilizer or well-rotted organic fertilizer once when it wakes from dormancy.
- Pruning: Prune just before the shoots break. Because flowers form on this year's new shoots, hard pruning increases flowering. Cut old and yellowed shoots at ground level. Fresh new shoots are cut back to the old spot. Remove dry branches and leaf-dropping stalks.
- Plant protection: Check the new shoots for aphids.
- General care: Good time for planting and transplanting.
- Pests & diseases: If you see mealybugs, wipe them off with alcohol-soaked cotton.
- Frost risk: If frost is expected, cover with frost fabric; if in a pot, move to a sheltered place. Damaged below approximately -2 °C.
- Watering: If there is no rainfall, water every 15 days. Water newly planted plants more often than established plants during the first year; the root system is still shallow.
- Fertilizing: Continue liquid fertilizing once or twice a month.
- Pruning: Remove yellowing branches.
- Plant protection: If symptoms spread and treatment is needed, consult a licensed plant-protection supplier or an agronomist. Plant protection products are regulated; follow local rules.
- General care: Good time for planting and transplanting.
- Pests & diseases: Look for aphids (green or black clusters of small insects) on fresh shoot tips. If there are only a few, you can knock them off with a strong jet of water.
- Frost risk: None, but protect from extreme heat and direct sun.
- Watering: If there is no rainfall, water once a week. Water newly planted plants more often than established plants during the first year; the root system is still shallow.
- Fertilizing: Continue feeding twice a month.
- Pruning: Cut yellowed or dried-out branches at the base.
- Plant protection: If symptoms spread and treatment is needed, consult a licensed plant-protection supplier or an agronomist. Plant protection products are regulated; follow local rules.
- General care: Suitable period for planting and transplanting. Apply mulch 5-7 cm thick over the root zone; it conserves soil moisture and suppresses weeds. Do not press mulch against the stem.
- Pests & diseases: Check fresh shoot tips for aphids (small clusters of green or black insects). If there are few, you can knock them off with a strong spray of water. If you see black spots with yellow rings on the leaves (black spot), collect the diseased leaves and remove them from the garden; the disease overwinters in fallen leaves.
- Watering: Water deeply twice a week; prefer infrequent and generous watering over small and frequent. Water so that the soil is wetted 10-15 cm down from the surface.
- Fertilizing: Continue liquid fertilizing.
- Pruning: Keep the plant airy by removing yellowing branches.
- Plant protection: If symptoms spread and treatment is needed, consult a licensed plant-protection supplier or an agronomist. Plant protection products are regulated; follow local rules.
- General care: Try not to move the plant too often.
- Fertilizing: Continue fertilizing.
- Pruning: Remove yellowing branches.
- Plant protection: The risk of spider mites is highest in these months.
- General care: Flowering begins. Keep it in a position sheltered from midday sun; scorching at the leaf edges is a sign of burn.
- Pests & diseases: Leaf drop can be a sign of excessive heat or thirst.
- Watering: Water deeply twice a week; prefer infrequent and generous watering over small and frequent. Water so that the soil is wetted 10-15 cm down from the surface.
- Fertilizing: Continue fertilizing.
- Pruning: If needed, lightly prune trailing branches to shape the plant.
- Plant protection: Continue pest control.
- General care: Flowering continues.
- Watering: If there is no rainfall, water once a week.
- Fertilizing: At the end of the month, end fertilizing.
- Pruning: Do light shaping pruning if needed.
- Plant protection: If symptoms spread and treatment is needed, consult a licensed plant-protection supplier or an agronomist. Plant protection products are regulated; follow local rules.
- General care: Prepare a bright spot where the plant will rest through winter, where it may receive less light.
- Pests & diseases: If you see black spots with yellow halos on the leaves (black spot), collect the diseased leaves and remove them from the garden; the disease overwinters in fallen leaves.
- Watering: If there is no rainfall, water every 15 days.
- Pruning: Remove only dry/yellowing branches.
- Plant protection: Check for overwintering pests (especially mealybugs).
- General care: Clear fallen leaves from the pot.
- Pests & diseases: Watch for weak shoots that may form due to low light.
- Frost risk: Protect it from cold drafts.
- Watering: Water as the soil surface dries.
- Pruning: Keep removing yellowing branches.
- Plant protection: Not necessary ('check if pests are seen').
- General care: When the radiators start heating, restart humidifying measures (misting, etc.).
- Pests & diseases: Leaf tips may dry out because of the dry air.
- Frost risk: If frost is expected, cover with frost fabric; if in a pot, move to a sheltered place. Damaged below approximately -2 °C.
- Watering: As the soil surface dries (every 7-10 days), give a little water.
- Pruning: Not required; only remove dead branches.
- Plant protection: Be careful about pests.
- General care: Evergreen leaves continue to lose water in winter. Water thoroughly once before the soil freezes.
- Pests & diseases: Avoid overwatering to prevent root rot.
- Frost risk: If frost is expected, cover with frost fabric; if in a pot, move to a sheltered place. Damaged below approximately -2 °C.
