Monthly care calendar

Timings are for a temperate Northern Hemisphere climate. In warmer areas tasks start earlier, in colder areas later; in the Southern Hemisphere shift them by six months.

January
  • Fertilizing: Not required, do not fertilize.
  • General care: To prevent root rot, make sure water does not collect at the base.
  • Pests & diseases: Root rot is the biggest risk; good drainage is critical.
February
  • Pruning: Remove dry leaves that may have been damaged in winter.
  • General care: Remove weeds around the plant.
  • Pests & diseases: General check.
March
  • Watering: If there is no rainfall and the soil is very dry, water lightly (e.g. 1-2 L/m²).
  • General care: This is the best time to propagate by division.
  • Pests & diseases: Check the new shoots.
April
  • Watering: As the soil dries out completely, 3-5 L/m² per week.
  • Pruning: Encourage new flowering by cutting spent flowers off at the base together with their stalks (deadheading).
  • Plant protection: If aphids are seen, spray with water or use soapy water made with Aleppo soap.

  • Pests & diseases: Aphids are rarely a problem.
May
  • Watering: About 5 L/m² once a week.
  • Pruning: Regularly remove spent flowers at the base; this encourages new flowering.
