Zebra Plant Care
Aphelandra squarrosa
A tropical plant striking for its white-veined, glossy green leaves and yellow flower clusters. It needs plenty of bright but indirect light, high humidity, a warm environment and constantly moist soil; it is very sensitive to cold drafts.
Monthly care calendar
Timings are for a temperate Northern Hemisphere climate. In warmer areas tasks start earlier, in colder areas later; in the Southern Hemisphere shift them by six months.
- Watering: Reduce watering. Water when the top layer of soil dries, but do not let the roots dry out completely.
- Pruning: Remove only leaves that are yellowed or dried out.
- Plant protection: In dry indoor air, watch out for spider mites and mealybugs (neem oil); apply it if you see pests.
- General care: To increase humidity, mist the leaves with water or use a pebble tray. Protect it from cold and hot air currents (radiators).
- Pests & diseases: Leaf drop is the most common problem; keep environmental conditions stable.
- Frost risk: If frost is expected, cover with frost fabric; if in a pot, move to a sheltered place. Damaged below approximately 5 °C.
- Watering: Keep the soil lightly moist.
- Plant protection: Check for spider mites and mealybugs.
- General care: Keep humidity high. Avoid sudden temperature changes.
- Pests & diseases: Dry leaf tips point to low humidity.
- Frost risk: If frost is expected, cover with frost fabric; if in a pot, move to a sheltered place. Damaged below approximately 5 °C.
- Watering: Once growth begins, increase watering and keep the soil consistently moist.
- Fertilizing: Apply a balanced fertilizer or well-rotted organic fertilizer once when it wakes from dormancy.
- Pruning: Prune the terminal shoot to make the plant fuller and encourage branching.
- Plant protection: Check the new shoots for aphids.
- General care: After pruning, repotting can be done. Pruned branches can be used as cuttings.
- Pests & diseases: Against the risk of root rot, make sure the bottom of the pot does not sit in water.
- Frost risk: If frost is expected, cover with frost fabric; if in a pot, move to a sheltered place. Damaged below approximately 5 °C.
- Watering: If there is no rainfall, water every 15 days.
- Fertilizing: Continue fertilizing every 2 weeks.
- Plant protection: Check for mealybugs and scale insects (isopropyl alcohol); apply if you see pests.

- Pests & diseases: Direct sun scorches the leaves; keep in indirect light.
- Frost risk: None; it must be kept indoors.
- Watering: Water deeply twice a week; prefer infrequent and generous watering over small and frequent. Water so that the soil is wetted 10-15 cm down from the surface.
