Pineapple Care
Ananas comosus
A tropical plant of the bromeliad family that produces a single fruit from the center of its leaf rosette. It loves plenty of sun (6+ hours a day) and very well-drained soil; overwatering the soil leads to root rot.
Monthly care calendar
Timings are for a temperate Northern Hemisphere climate. In warmer areas tasks start earlier, in colder areas later; in the Southern Hemisphere shift them by six months.
- Watering: Reduce watering. Water as the soil dries (every 4-5 weeks). Do not leave water in the central reservoir.
- Pruning: Cut only completely dried-out lower leaves.
- Plant protection: In dry indoor air, watch out for mealybugs (isopropyl alcohol).
- General care: Place it in the brightest possible spot (south-facing window). Protect it from cold drafts.
- Pests & diseases: Root rot is the biggest danger.
- Frost risk: If frost is expected, cover with frost fabric; if in a pot, move to a sheltered place. Damaged below approximately 10 °C.
- Watering: Reduce watering. Water as the soil dries (every 4-5 weeks).
- Pruning: Cut only completely dried-out lower leaves.
- Plant protection: Continue checking for mealybugs.
- General care: Keep it away from radiators and increase humidity by occasionally misting the leaves.
- Pests & diseases: Watch out for root rot.
- Frost risk: If frost is expected, cover with frost fabric; if in a pot, move to a sheltered place. Damaged below approximately 10 °C.
- Watering: Start watering as the topsoil dries (every 2-3 weeks). You can fill the central reservoir with clean water.
- Fertilizing: Apply a balanced fertilizer or well-rotted organic fertilizer once when it wakes from dormancy.
- Pruning: Remove leaves that dry out in winter.
- Plant protection: Check for mealybugs and scale insects.
- General care: If needed, this is a suitable time for repotting.
- Pests & diseases: Avoid sudden temperature changes.
- Frost risk: If frost is expected, cover with frost fabric; if in a pot, move to a sheltered place. Damaged below approximately 10 °C.
- Watering: If there is no rainfall, water every 15 days.
- Fertilizing: Once a month, apply a balanced liquid fertilizer (half strength).
- Plant protection: Check for mealybugs and scale insects.
- General care: When the weather warms, you can begin acclimating it to a partly shaded spot outdoors.
- Pests & diseases: Watch out for root rot.
- Frost risk: It may still be risky at night, so do not rush to move it outdoors.
- Watering: If there is no rainfall, water once a week.
- Fertilizing: Give a half-dose balanced liquid fertilizer once or twice a month.
- Plant protection: Check for mealybugs and scale insects.
- General care: Spread a 5-7 cm layer of mulch over the root zone; it retains soil moisture and suppresses weeds. Do not pile mulch against the trunk. Drainage is vital for this plant. In heavy soil that holds water, plant it on a raised mound or berm 20-30 cm high so that the root collar stays above the surrounding soil level.
- Pests & diseases: Wait to separate the newly emerging offsets (pups).
- Watering: Water deeply twice a week; prefer infrequent and generous watering over small and frequent. Water so that the soil is wetted 10-15 cm down from the surface.
- Fertilizing: Every 2-3 weeks, apply a balanced liquid fertilizer at half strength.
- Pruning: Remove only dry lower leaves.
- Plant protection: Check for mealybugs and scale insects.
- General care: If plants are outdoors, protect them from harsh midday sun.
- Pests & diseases: Sunburn (browning of the leaves) may occur.
- Watering: Water deeply twice a week; prefer infrequent and generous watering over small and frequent. Water so that the soil is wetted 10-15 cm down from the surface.
- Fertilizing: Every 2-3 weeks, apply a balanced liquid fertilizer at half strength.
- Plant protection: Check for mealybugs and scale insects.
- General care: Keep it in a position sheltered from midday sun; scorching at the leaf edges is a sign of burn.
- Pests & diseases: Watch out for root rot and pests.
- General care: If offsets from the mother plant are large enough (about 1/3 the size of the mother plant), you can separate them.
- Pests & diseases: Watch out for root rot.
- Watering: If there is no rainfall, water once a week.
- Fertilizing: At the end of the month, stop fertilizing.
- Pruning: Remove only dry lower leaves.
- Plant protection: If plants are outdoors, carefully check for mealybugs and scale insects before bringing them indoors, and treat with neem oil if necessary.
- General care: When night temperatures begin to drop at the end of the month, move the plant indoors to the brightest location.
- Pests & diseases: Check for root rot and harmful insects.
- Frost risk: At the end of the month, outdoor risk may begin; the plant should be brought indoors.
- Watering: If there is no rainfall, water every 15 days.
- Plant protection: After bringing it indoors, check for pests.
- General care: Place the plant in its brightest possible position for the winter.
- Pests & diseases: Watch out for root rot.
- Frost risk: It must absolutely be kept indoors.
- Watering: Reduce watering substantially (every 4-5 weeks).
- Plant protection: Check for mealybugs.
- General care: In winter rains, make sure water does not pool in the root zone; for this plant, drainage is more critical than irrigation.
- Pests & diseases: Watch out for root rot.
- Frost risk: If frost is expected, cover with frost fabric; if in a pot, move to a sheltered place. Damaged below approximately 10 °C.
- Watering: Reduce watering substantially (every 4-5 weeks).
- Plant protection: Check for mealybugs.
- General care: Evergreen leaves continue to lose water in winter. Water thoroughly once before the soil freezes.
- Pests & diseases: Watch out for root rot.
- Frost risk: If frost is expected, cover with frost fabric; if in a pot, move to a sheltered place. Damaged below approximately 10 °C.
