Allium ilgazense Care
Allium ilgazense
WARNING: A rare species endemic to Turkey. It is native to the Ilgaz Mountains, and successful growing requires well-drained soil, cold winters and a dry summer dormancy period. It is difficult to adapt to Izmir's climate and requires expertise.
Monthly care calendar
Timings are for a temperate Northern Hemisphere climate. In warmer areas tasks start earlier, in colder areas later; in the Southern Hemisphere shift them by six months.
- Watering: Winter rains are generally sufficient. If the soil is completely dry, water very lightly; waterlogging must be avoided.
- General care: Keep the area around the root collar airy.
- Pests & diseases: Watch for bulb rot caused by excess moisture.
- Frost risk: None; it is cold tolerant.
- Watering: The winter rains are sufficient. If the soil is dry as the leaves begin to emerge, water lightly.
- Fertilizing: A very dilute potassium-rich liquid fertilizer (e.g. NPK 5-10-15) can be given; do not overapply; seek advice.
- General care: Clear weeds by hand.
- Pests & diseases: Watch for onion fly and rot.
- Frost risk: None; it is cold tolerant.
- Watering: As the soil dries, water lightly; reduce if there is rain.
- Fertilizing: Apply a balanced fertilizer or well-rotted organic fertilizer once when it wakes from dormancy.
- Pruning: Cut only the faded flowers; the leaves must stay.
- Plant protection: Monitor the leaves for rust.
- General care: If it is in a pot, ensure good air circulation.
- Pests & diseases: Check for aphids.
- Watering: If there is no rainfall, water every 15 days.
- Pruning: Cut faded flower stalks.
- Plant protection: Monitor for rust (fungus) and aphids (sulfur).
- General care: Wait for the leaves to turn yellow and dry out on their own; this is necessary for the bulb to store nutrients.
- Pests & diseases: Watch out for leaf spot diseases.
- Watering: If there is no rainfall, water once a week.
- Pruning: Cut only completely dried-out leaves and stalks.
- General care: Spread a 5-7 cm layer of mulch over the root zone; it retains soil moisture and suppresses weeds. Do not pile mulch against the trunk. Drainage is vital for this plant. In heavy soil that holds water, plant it on a raised mound or berm 20-30 cm high so that the root collar stays above the surrounding soil level.
- Pests & diseases: At this stage, watering will rot the bulbs.
- Watering: Water deeply twice a week; prefer infrequent and generous watering over small and frequent. Water so that the soil is wetted 10-15 cm down from the surface.
