Aechmea Care

Aechmea (cins)

An epiphytic bromeliad species, meaning it lives on trees in nature. It collects water in the funnel (rosette) at its center, and it is watered from there. It likes bright environments without direct sun and an airy potting mix (such as orchid mix).

Frost-tender (protect from frost) · 8 °C / 46 °F

Monthly care calendar

Timings are for a temperate Northern Hemisphere climate. In warmer areas tasks start earlier, in colder areas later; in the Southern Hemisphere shift them by six months.

January
  • Watering: Keep the funnel (cup) in its center a quarter full and replace the water with fresh water once a month. Only moisten its soil lightly when it has dried out.
  • Pruning: Cut only the dried-out leaf tips.
  • Plant protection: Check the bases of the leaves for scale insects or mealybugs.
  • General care: Provide moderate humidity and keep it away from radiators.
  • Pests & diseases: Rot at the base of the trunk is a sign that the soil has been overwatered.
  • Frost risk: If frost is expected, cover with frost fabric; if in a pot, move to a sheltered place. Damaged below approximately 8 °C.
February
  • Watering: Keep the water in its cup fresh (change it once a month) and moisten the soil lightly as it dries.
  • Pruning: Remove drying leaf tips.
  • Plant protection: Continue pest control.
  • General care: Maintain the humidity level.
  • Pests & diseases: Make sure the water in the cup does not stagnate.
  • Frost risk: If frost is expected, cover with frost fabric; if in a pot, move to a sheltered place. Damaged below approximately 8 °C.
March
  • Watering: Keep its cup full and start keeping the soil moist.
  • Fertilizing: Start applying a very dilute (quarter dose) balanced liquid fertilizer (such as NPK 20-20-20) once a month, to the soil or sprayed on the leaves. Do not put fertilizer in the cup (do not overapply).
  • Pruning: Carry out the necessary cleanup.
  • Plant protection: Check the new growth for pests.
  • General care: This is the right time to separate offsets that have reached one-third the size of the mother plant.
  • Pests & diseases: Leaf spot can be a sign of fungus.
  • Frost risk: If frost is expected, cover with frost fabric; if in a pot, move to a sheltered place. Damaged below approximately 8 °C.
April
  • Watering: If there is no rainfall, water every 15 days.
  • Fertilizing: Continue feeding at quarter strength every 2-4 weeks.
  • Pruning: Do cleanup pruning.
  • Plant protection: Continue pest control.
  • General care: Rotate the pot for even light exposure.
  • Pests & diseases: Pale colors can be a sign of insufficient light.
May
  • Watering: If there is no rainfall, water once a week.
  • Fertilizing: Continue fertilizing.
  • Pruning: Main flowers may begin to lose their color; they can be cut once they have lost their ornamental appearance.
  • Plant protection: Continue pest control.
  • General care: Spread a 5-7 cm layer of mulch over the root zone; it retains soil moisture and suppresses weeds. Do not pile mulch against the trunk. Drainage is vital for this plant. In heavy soil that holds water, plant it on a raised mound or berm 20-30 cm high so that the root collar stays above the surrounding soil level.
  • Pests & diseases: Monitor the development of the offsets.
June
  • Watering: Water deeply twice a week; prefer infrequent and generous watering over small and frequent. Water so that the soil is wetted 10-15 cm down from the surface.
  • Fertilizing: Continue fertilizing.
  • Pruning: After flowering, the main plant will gradually die; remove its yellowing leaves.
  • Plant protection: Continue pest control.
  • General care: Protect from scorching direct sunlight.
  • Pests & diseases: Brown spots on the leaves can be sunburn.
  • Frost risk: Protect it from air-conditioning drafts.
July
  • Watering: Water deeply twice a week; prefer infrequent and generous watering over small and frequent. Water so that the soil is wetted 10-15 cm down from the surface.
  • Fertilizing: Continue fertilizing.
  • Pruning: Remove the drying leaves of the aging mother plant.
  • Plant protection: Continue pest control.
  • General care: Keep it in a position sheltered from midday sun; scorching at the leaf edges is a sign of burn.
  • Pests & diseases: Extreme heat and dry air can increase the risk of red spider mites.
August
  • Watering: Water deeply twice a week; prefer infrequent and generous watering over small and frequent. Water so that the soil is wetted 10-15 cm down from the surface.
  • Fertilizing: Continue fertilizing.
  • Pruning: If the mother plant has become unsightly and the offsets are large enough, the mother plant can be cut away.
  • Plant protection: Continue pest control.
  • General care: The offsets can be separated and planted in their own pots.
  • Pests & diseases: Monitor the adaptation process of the newly planted offsets.
September
  • Watering: If there is no rainfall, water once a week.
  • Fertilizing: Reduce fertilizing to once a month.
  • Pruning: Continue cleanup pruning.
  • Plant protection: Continue pest control.
  • General care: It is still a good time to separate the offsets or repot.
  • Pests & diseases: Observe the plant's condition at the change of season.
October
  • Watering: If there is no rainfall, water every 15 days.
  • Fertilizing: From the end of the month, stop fertilizing.
  • Pruning: Do the final cleanup.
  • Plant protection: Low risk.
  • General care: Move it away from heaters that have started running.
  • Pests & diseases: Dry indoor air can cause leaf tips to dry out.
November
  • Watering: Keep its cup quarter full and moisten the soil lightly only when it dries.
  • Pruning: Cut only the leaf tips that are drying.
  • Plant protection: Low risk.
  • General care: In winter rains, make sure water does not pool in the root zone; for this plant, drainage is more critical than irrigation.
  • Pests & diseases: Be careful about the risk of root rot.
  • Frost risk: If frost is expected, cover with frost fabric; if in a pot, move to a sheltered place. Damaged below approximately 8 °C.
December
  • Watering: This is the minimum watering period. Keep the water in the saucer fresh and do not leave the soil too wet.
  • Pruning: Do cleanup pruning.
  • Plant protection: Low risk.
  • General care: Evergreen leaves continue to lose water in winter. Water thoroughly once before the soil freezes.
  • Pests & diseases: Monitor the general condition.
  • Frost risk: If frost is expected, cover with frost fabric; if in a pot, move to a sheltered place. Damaged below approximately 8 °C.
