Maidenhair Fern Care
Adiantum
It has very delicate, fine leaves. It likes spots without direct sunlight that are bright, highly humid and free of drafts. Keeping its soil constantly moist is critical.
Monthly care calendar
Timings are for a temperate Northern Hemisphere climate. In warmer areas tasks start earlier, in colder areas later; in the Southern Hemisphere shift them by six months.
- Watering: Water as the soil surface dries slightly; never let it dry out completely.
- Pruning: Cut only leaves that are drying or yellowing, at the base.
- Plant protection: Check the undersides of the leaves for scale insects or mealybugs.
- General care: To keep humidity high, mist the leaves every day or stand the pot on a pebble tray filled with water.
- Pests & diseases: Drying at the leaf tips is a sign of low humidity or thirst.
- Frost risk: If frost is expected, cover with frost fabric; if in a pot, move to a sheltered place. Damaged below approximately 5 °C.
- Watering: Continue keeping the soil constantly moist; do not let it dry out.
- Pruning: Continue removing drying leaves.
- Plant protection: Do pest control.
- General care: Keep humidity high. Make sure the pot base does not sit in water.
- Pests & diseases: Watch out for the risk of root rot.
- Frost risk: If frost is expected, cover with frost fabric; if in a pot, move to a sheltered place. Damaged below approximately 5 °C.
- Watering: Increase watering as new shoots emerge and the days get longer.
- Fertilizing: Apply a balanced fertilizer or well-rotted organic fertilizer once when it wakes from dormancy.
- Pruning: If necessary, prune to help the plant recover.
- Plant protection: Check the new shoots for aphids.
- General care: If the pot is full of roots, it is the best time to repot into a pot one size larger.
- Pests & diseases: Observe the new leaves.
- Frost risk: If frost is expected, cover with frost fabric; if in a pot, move to a sheltered place. Damaged below approximately 5 °C.
- Watering: If there is no rainfall, water 1-2 times a week.
- Fertilizing: Apply a balanced liquid fertilizer at half strength every 2-4 weeks (do not overfeed).
- Pruning: Remove leaves that look unhealthy.
- Plant protection: Check regularly for aphids and mealybugs.
- General care: For even growth, rotate the pot once a week.
- Pests & diseases: Leaf spotting can be a sign of overwatering or fungus.
- Watering: Water 2-3 times a week. Water so that the soil is wetted 10-15 cm down from the surface.
- Fertilizing: Continue feeding at half strength every 2-4 weeks.
- Pruning: Do not prune except for necessary cleanup pruning.
- Plant protection: In hot weather, check the undersides of the leaves against the risk of spider mites and keep humidity high.
- General care: Spread a 5-7 cm layer of mulch over the root zone; it retains soil moisture and suppresses weeds. Do not pile mulch against the trunk.
- Pests & diseases: Wilted leaves can be a sign of overwatering or underwatering.
- Watering: Water deeply 3-4 times a week, early in the morning. Water so that the soil is wetted 10-15 cm down from the surface. Frequent shallow watering pulls the roots to the surface.
- Fertilizing: Continue feeding at half strength every 2-4 weeks.
- Pruning: Remove yellowing leaves.
- Plant protection: Keep up checks for spider mites and mealybugs.
- General care: Protect from direct and intense sunlight, as the leaves can scorch.

- General care: Keep it in a position sheltered from midday sun; scorching at the leaf edges is a sign of burn.
- Pests & diseases: Sudden leaf drop can be a sign of shock (transplanting, temperature change) or drought.
- Watering: Water deeply 3-4 times a week, early in the morning. Water so that the soil is wetted 10-15 cm down from the surface. Frequent shallow watering pulls the roots to the surface.
- Fertilizing: Continue fertilizing.
- Pruning: Remove yellowing leaves.
- Plant protection: Continue pest control.
- General care: Continue to provide high humidity and a draft-free environment.
- Pests & diseases: Observe whether the plant is under stress.
