Monthly care calendar

Timings are for a temperate Northern Hemisphere climate. In warmer areas tasks start earlier, in colder areas later; in the Southern Hemisphere shift them by six months.

January
  • Watering: Not required, natural rainfall is sufficient.
  • Pruning: Dry stalks and leaves left from last year can be cleared.
  • General care: To prevent root rot in winter, make sure the soil does not hold water.
  • Pests & diseases: In excessively wet soil, check for risk of root rot.
February
  • Pruning: Before new shoots appear, cut all the dry stalks left over from last season at ground level.
  • General care: A suitable time for propagation by division and weed clearing.
  • Pests & diseases: Check the new shoots against snails.
March
  • Watering: If there is no rainfall and the soil has dried out, water 1-2 L/plant every 15-20 days.
  • Fertilizing: Apply compost or a multipurpose slow-release NPK fertilizer (such as 5-10-5) to the soil (do not overapply).
  • Pruning: For a sturdier structure, the tips of new shoots can be pinched out.
  • Plant protection: If aphids appear on young shoots, use a soft soap (Arap sabunu) solution or neem oil.
  • General care: Propagation by division from the roots can continue.
  • Pests & diseases: In humid weather, watch for signs of powdery mildew.
  • Frost risk: Protect fresh shoots against late frosts.
April
  • Watering: Depending on the weather and rainfall, water with 2-3 L per plant every 10-15 days.
  • Fertilizing: If it was not fertilized in March, apply a balanced NPK fertilizer now (do not overapply).
  • Plant protection: Continue checking for aphids.
  • General care: Clear weeds regularly.
  • Pests & diseases: Against the risk of powdery mildew, make sure there is good air circulation between plants.
  • Frost risk: Low risk.
May
  • Watering: Once a week, 3-4 L per plant, or water as the soil dries.
  • Fertilizing: Avoid high-nitrogen fertilizers, which cause weak, leggy stems.
  • Pruning: Regularly remove spent flowers at the base; this encourages new flowering.
  • Plant protection: Check for aphids and spittlebugs.
  • General care: Drainage is vital for this plant. In heavy, water-retaining soil, plant on a mound or bed raised 20-30 cm, and keep the root collar above the surrounding soil level.
  • Pests & diseases: Watch out for powdery mildew and leaf spot diseases.
June
  • Watering: In a long drought, water deeply once a month.
  • Pruning: Regularly remove spent flowers at the base; this encourages new flowering.
  • Plant protection: Continue pest control.
  • General care: This is a good time to pick flowers.
  • Pests & diseases: In hot and humid weather, watch for fungal diseases.
July
  • Watering: In midsummer, deep watering every 15-20 days is enough. Established plants (over 2 years old) do not need watering in most years. Water so that the soil is wetted to a depth of 10-15 cm from the surface.
  • Pruning: Regularly remove spent flowers at the base; this encourages new flowering.
  • Plant protection: Check the undersides of the leaves for spider mites.
  • General care: Check the mulch to keep the soil cool.
  • Pests & diseases: Monitor for signs of stress during extreme heat.
August
  • Watering: In midsummer, deep watering every 15-20 days is enough. Established plants (over 2 years old) do not need watering in most years. Water so that the soil is wetted to a depth of 10-15 cm from the surface.
  • Pruning: Regularly remove spent flowers at the base; this encourages new flowering.
  • Plant protection: Continue pest control.
  • General care: Clear weeds.
  • Pests & diseases: Watch for drought stress.
September
  • Watering: In a long drought, water deeply once a month.
  • Pruning: Regularly remove spent flowers at the base; this encourages new flowering.
  • General care: One of the best times to propagate by root division.
  • Pests & diseases: Powdery mildew can appear again with autumn humidity.
October
  • Watering: If it is very dry, water 1-2 times a month.
  • Pruning: Cut all stalks and leaves back to 15 cm above the soil surface.
  • General care: Clear fallen leaves from around the plant.
  • Pests & diseases: Destroy diseased plant residues.
November
  • Pruning: If not pruned in October, prune now.
  • General care: In winter rains, make sure water does not pool in the root zone; for this plant, drainage is more critical than irrigation.
  • Pests & diseases: Check the area around the roots.
December
  • General care: Make sure drainage is good to protect against excessive winter rainfall.
  • Pests & diseases: Watch out for the risk of root rot.
