Garden Care Guide

Red Maple Care

Acer rubrum

A tree famous for its dazzling red autumn colors that likes moist and acidic soils. It has low tolerance of the alkaline soils in many regions of Turkey and suffers chlorosis (leaf yellowing) in these soils; therefore it performs best in places with suitable soil conditions, such as riverbanks and pond surroundings.

Hardy · -25 °C / -13 °F

Monthly care calendar

Timings are for a temperate Northern Hemisphere climate. In warmer areas tasks start earlier, in colder areas later; in the Southern Hemisphere shift them by six months.

January
  • Pruning: The ideal time to correct structural problems and remove weak branches. Narrow V-shaped branch angles should be pruned because they may break later.
  • Plant protection: If needed, a winter oil (Bordeaux mixture) can be applied.
  • General care: A good time to check the soil pH.
February
  • Pruning: Finish pruning before the buds swell.
  • General care: Its red flowers open before the leaves.
March
  • Watering: Water a newly planted specimen more often than established plants during its first year, as its root system is still shallow.
  • Fertilizing: If the soil is alkaline (pH > 7), try to lower the pH by applying sulfur or an acidic fertilizer (ammonium sulfate, rhododendron fertilizer); do not overapply.
  • General care: Suitable period for planting and transplanting. Flowering begins.
April
  • Watering: If there is no rainfall, water every 15 days.
  • Plant protection: If symptoms spread and treatment is needed, consult a licensed plant-protection supplier or an agronomist. Plant protection products are regulated; follow local rules.
  • General care: Flowering continues.
  • Pests & diseases: Look for aphids (green or black clusters of small insects) on fresh shoot tips. If there are only a few, you can knock them off with a strong jet of water.
May
  • Watering: If there is no rainfall, water once a week.
  • Pruning: Do not prune during the growing season.
  • Plant protection: If symptoms spread and treatment is needed, consult a licensed plant-protection supplier or an agronomist. Plant protection products are regulated; follow local rules.
  • General care: Spread a 5-7 cm layer of mulch over the root zone; it retains soil moisture and suppresses weeds. Do not pile mulch against the trunk.
  • Pests & diseases: Look for aphids (green or black clusters of small insects) on fresh shoot tips. If there are only a few, you can knock them off with a strong jet of water.
June
  • Watering: Water deeply twice a week; prefer infrequent and generous watering over small and frequent. The root zone should be wetted to a depth of 30-40 cm.
  • Pruning: Do shaping and hedge pruning. Do not prune while the sap is flowing. In alkaline soil it causes yellowing between the leaf veins; in acidic soil the fall color is much more vivid.
  • Plant protection: If symptoms spread and treatment is needed, consult a licensed plant-protection supplier or an agronomist. Plant protection products are regulated; follow local rules.
  • General care: Protect the thin bark from mechanical damage (lawn mowers, etc.).
  • Pests & diseases: Look for aphids (green or black clusters of small insects) on fresh shoot tips. If there are only a few, you can knock them off with a strong jet of water.
July
  • Watering: Water deeply twice a week; prefer infrequent and generous watering over small and frequent. The root zone should be wetted to a depth of 30-40 cm.
  • General care: High temperatures and dry soils can cause scorching on the leaf edges.
  • Pests & diseases: Be watchful for signs of Verticillium wilt (sudden branch dieback).
August
  • Watering: Water deeply twice a week; prefer infrequent and generous watering over small and frequent. The root zone should be wetted to a depth of 30-40 cm.
  • General care: Regular watering helps recovery after summer stress.
September
  • Watering: If there is no rainfall, water once a week.
  • Pruning: Do the last formative pruning of the season; do not let it put out new shoots before frost.
  • General care: The most important factors for vivid autumn colors are genetics, cool nights, and a healthy tree.
October
  • Watering: If there is no rainfall, water every 15 days.
  • General care: Enjoy the autumn colors. Planting saplings is suitable only if the soil is acidic and enough water can be provided.
  • Pests & diseases: Clear fallen leaves.
November
  • Watering: Water a newly planted specimen more often than established plants during its first year, as its root system is still shallow.
  • Pruning: You can begin winter pruning after the leaves have completely fallen.
  • General care: Good time for planting and transplanting. Collect fallen leaves; many disease agents and pests overwinter under them.
December
  • Pruning: This is an ideal month for pruning.
  • General care: The tree is dormant.
  • Frost risk: It is cold hardy, but mulch is important to protect the roots from excessive freezing.
